It was last year I think the Turkish government had a fight on it,s hands as due to the main parking area above the beach at Gallipoli was being widened. In the construction human remains were found. It put every Australian up in arms about it and with considerable political manouvering things were put right eventually. Also the year before last a few aussie louts got drunk at the site causing a huge fracas back here resulting in banning all alcahol being bought to the services. Now the Turks over the years have welcomed the Australians as brothers as both countries blood was spilt there 80 odd years ago. Will have to find the poem that is at the beach now which says it all really.I think there should be a balance of recovered aircraft around.Have half fly and the other half as is at time of recovery. Here in Auss we have two flying Spits down at Temora.Which from here is about at least 12 hours drive away.We have no Hurris, none flying or static,a couple of static Lancs,no B17,s,one static B24,we sold off our only B25.Have a various lot of other aircraft sitting around in Hangars not doing much.We have a beaufort bomber sitting out the back and I would love to be able to do something to it(if it was ours). In 2045 kids will still be interested in these obselete old prop driven planes that fired machine guns at each other in a romantic time of legend and myth,of hero,s and villains, good against evil.

My mate Earl told me a similar story that happened to his mate in the Med.Unfortunately the Erk on the tail didn,t make it.Thanks for the pic Daz.Yes Ali the story is well recorded.Have an old BBC doco with her in it.Told how she was able to straddle the tail fillet and was able to manipulate the rudder controls on the tail.Pilot radioed in of control problems and tower confirmed the problem but not telling the pilot in case he panicked(having a 5foot 1 inch female flying on the back of a spit) and told him to land straight away.Pilot landed without incident and nearly had a heart attack when discovering the control problem.Lucky girl.

From somewhere I have read that during a transfer flight by a staffel of 190,s they got caught with their knickers down by some Mustangs.Sadly a few were shot down with Erks in them..Or it could be my holey memory again.

Yes be careful mate.We tried to do a swap with “someone” with our spit drawings and manuals for some german stuff. Was quite interested to see our stuff online up for sale not long after…and no German stuff was sent back to us.Hmmmmm.There are a few P40 projects going on around the place.Ask nicely and they might bite.

I think Pappy was still alive and had some idea about the show.He was a larger than life sorta guy. Many books have been written about him and the black sheep but finding the truth could be harder.

I know the germans used to transport their Erks by putting them in the fuse through the radio hatch.Think a 190 could hold two.Would be interesting to see a Spitbag though.

How about the ABC series “The machine gunners” featuring the tail section of a Stuka lodged in the roof of a school with the kids howling with glee outside…is there any info on it or is it a figmant of my imagination…

As far as homebuilts go we have the success stories and we have the cowboys.Do it by the book with proper build techniques,a proven design that has been tested in destructive and non destructive testing.Do it wrong, not deburring holes, use substandard materials, dodgy build techniques with half assed paperwork and your in for a wild ride. Here in Auss a homebuild AFAIK has more freedom than a proven aircraft types restoration or new build.Scarey..

OOhh that crane would have been a nice lightening conductor. We are but ants in regard to the savageness of mother nature.Had a storm like that here today.Thing was we are in the middle of winter, very unusual for this time of year. Can,t complain,we need the rain desperately.Going onto level 5 water restrictions next month,i.e,….no outside water whatsoever..scarey times ahead.
