some of the TFC tour, with the Beaufighter being huge.

That would be the easiest option regarding the scarcity of Hercules XVI’s.
Here’s to hoping.
Cees
Err. no
Cees
Having been to Duxford last saturday (pics to follow later) I saw a Hastings and the fuselage the Hermes so a Halifax is missing from that collection. The possibility could present itself soon when perhaps two Halifax projects could be available, one of which could be a real boost to the IWM and the cockpit of PN323 would be very useful. Such a project (of years) taking place at Duxford would be a real crowdpuller as well.

These plates are also to be found on early Merlins (III and X?)
Cees
could they use your halifax cockpit? lol
Well,
We bang our heads against the same protrusions the wartime ones had.
YAM haven’t requested the use of the Halifax cockpit,……yet.
Cees
Time for a full size Stirling mock-up/model/reproduction/replica/reconstruction to materialize to represent this important type to be later joined by the finished forward fuselage of the Stirling Project.

The YAM concoction serves to put something mostly Halifax-like on it’s feet for Joe Public and the Hally vets to view, but I just don’t see it as a Halifax I’m afraid, and I’m glad that the IWM nose never went onto it.
Mike,
So many people so many views, but to the majority of the people, especially the vets it’s a Halifax.

It is very easy for outsiders to comment sitting in the comfort of their own home but I say hats off to the team who achieved it. It goes a long way to keeping the memory alive and most visitors will be impressed at the pure site of a Hali bag sitting there, most won’t start counting rivets! those that do are always welcome to do better.
Well said!

Mark, if I may quote from you
The YAM “Halifax” isnt a Halifax, it “is” an excellent replica, with various compromises to achieve that, it does contain some original Halifax fuselage portions so its a hybrid, but the Hastings wing is not an exact equivalent to a Halifax wing.
Unquote.
The Hastings wing IS in fact Halifax, with the centre section adapted for the Hastings rounder fuselage cross section, underslung nacelles and the intermediate wingsection between the engines is wider. Perhaps that’s why the dihedral of YAM’s Halifax is flatter. But in essence it’s genuine Halifax.
Personally I feel that HR792, or Friday or whatever you call it (Airfix), it has more provenance than many flying aircraft these days. Luckily YAM are completely open about the way the Halifax was constructed. I thoroughly envjoyed the new book on her construction (Home is the Halifax).
There is a possibility that two new Halifax reconstruction projects can be started provided a large national museum is willing to take part (IWM?), now that would be great.
Cees
Don’t you just love those Halifax threads, I do;)
The radiation situation was six or seven years ago, the cockpit is fully open with reproduction instrument faces fitted. It’s a great way to view the conditions the young airmen went to war in.
Cees
Nobody there then this saturday?
Cees
Some years ago in the German magazine Jet & Prop there was a sonar picture clearly showing the outline of a He177 Greif. The wreck was located in a German lake near the Swiss border (Lake Constance or the Boden See).
Don’t know if this was a hoax though.
Cees
Also used on the bomb aimers panels in Halifax aircraft.

AFAIK the deepest excavation carried out in The Netherlands was one done by the RNethAF team where they got one of the Hercules engines from a Wellington from a depth of 30 ft. The engine was well stripped of its cilinders of course (at one time it was on show at our museum).
