The subject of the funding for the Red Arrows seems to come up at least once a year, if not biannually.
As far as I heard it is the usual military “spending review”. Now you often hear about these reviews leading to cuts, so it would be easy to assume likewise policy for the Reds.
However in my view, a spending review should look at the age of the aircraft and give them some new Hawks. I believe there are still a small number of active airframes that date back to the first Hawk-based display team. There was a documentary on them about 5 years ago where they showed the ground crews patching up fatigue cracks on the tail. You can’t keep fixing and ‘batting forever.

I know an operator who in high winds used to park a double-decker windward of their aircraft.
The C152s were worringly a bumpin’ and a wigglin’ on Thursday. The Arrow’s suspension I swear was deflecting up and down by at least 3 inches.
You can bet certification will take years if they go down that route
Then the paperwork fees will equal about 50% of the unit’s price
Add another another 50% for labour.
So say a £1000 unit will instantly become £2000.
However
Is portable radio equipment exempt from certification? The Kinetics unit might be like use of portable GPS… Does it say anywhere you need a fitted and certified transponder for SSR use?
Nothing stated on their website:

I get the 180 thing, but it is the questions where it says “you are on X radial flying Y magnetic with Z set on the OBI” that fox. 😮 🙂
I’ll send you a mail in a bit …
Having seen the Oxford book, I think I’d “get it” due to the better use of diagrams comparitive to Jepp.
Is it any good?
These VOR radial questions can be a nightmare, can’t they?
Last year we spent £600 just to have two light aircraft seats welded for reinforcement then recovered. Its an expensive business, especially if there is authority regulation involved where you need an approved man and materials for the work. In the scheme of all things aviation, 2k doesn’t seem too bad.
70 deg right-hand turn at what was it it? 700 or 900ft?
Bum-clenching 🙂
Odd that it improves the look of the aircraft immeasurably, whilst the same change makes the Spitfire uglier.

Worringly the “carbon-offset” principle has become commercialised and so is not as simple as planting a tree. ITN (if you believe them) reckon an offset fee e.g. £5, could go toward a solar panel scheme in Africa. Hmmm….
CO2 is all the rage at the moment. Have we forgotten about the rainforests? That could quite easily upset the world’s weather by itself.

Nah the biggest change is JAA, which happened about 1999. Get an up-to-date book for Air Law.
There is on pprune a UK PPL student who went to Florida recently with old books, studied there whilst flying but failed his Air Law. So he was jeopordising the three week period he had allowed for in the US. On the same post, he admitted to using a really old textbook then asked for help. The solution was really simple :p
Don’t need to scrounge a flight. Pop over, grab someone with another headset and do a radio check on an aircraft.
As of 1st Dec 06, the name is Wolverhampton Halfpenny Green
What happened to the Paris stage?
