But you would lose a lot of the value of the deterrence. Surely it’s only a deterrent if it’s guarenteed to be 100% survivable, to always get through. Otherwise you give the other side the thought that they could fight and win a non conventional conflict.
and at the end of the day, a subsonic cruise missile is no where near survivable as a MIRV dropping in from space at 30 miles/second.
I agree wholeheartedly, but if it comes down to having nuclear cruise missiles or no nuclear capability at all, it would have to do.
I think its a scandalous situation that we find ourselves in, but there we are.
Will a nuke warhead fit on the likes of Scalp?
I don’t see why not, they fit into the likes of the ASMP-A, and France has already modified it to be carried by naval units.
One of the things is that the A340 and A330 use the same wing, but as the A330 has only 2 engines it leaves the two outboard engine stations for refueling pods instead.
Should the worst come to the worst and this cannot be changed, I would make the following suggestion.
Option A) Keep trident going as long as possible with a refit/upgrade. Possibly replace with either next gen US SSBN or co-developed and constructed French one to cut development costs in half.
Option B) Once trident is retired, replace with new, long range supersonic cruise missiles that can be carried aboard Astute class subs, and buy another half dozen of these (at least)
Option C) US made ICBMs
Option D) Ok, so this one is far out, but… Strategic bomber UCAV with ASMP-A
Kinda old news, isn’t it?
I thought that all the recriminations were weeks ago?

I see lots of suggestions to bring back all British troops from Germany, but how much would this save? The bases and facilities there would have to be constructed in the UK, meaning that we would be faced with a huge bill against any (rental?) costs that we might be incurring currently.
US to purchase
While I can’t really see it happening myself, it would be a huge boost to the program…

Will the world buy the new A400M military plane?
Interesting; this story says that the ‘Grizzly’ can lift 37 tonnes?
Is ‘Grizzly’ going to be the name in RAF service?
The Soviet Union never exported its best types, and usually only deployed them outside the SU once they had been superseded, it reduces the chance of NATO seeing them and getting a chance to assess their capabilities and the chance of defection with hardware.
I saw a programme on Discovery TV very recently with a number of B45 Tornadoes, (not Tonkas), North American typo, in RAF markings that overflew Russia. early 50s stuff.
According to Wiki the B45 wa used, ad hoc, by the RAF

Also, obituary of Squadron Leader John Crampton, which sheds light on the matter:

People keep stating worse case senarios like the UK going up against a top flight opponent in a high intensity war and needing stealth to get through their large state of the art air defence networks. It is like saying we have to have SLBMs to defend against other peoples SLBM/ICBM yet no one has used a nuclear weapon since 1945.
Maybe nobody has used one because of the principle of deterrence?
Yes they is the very smallest of chances we will fight a high intensity war in the next 25 years but then again the Martians might invade or the US invade Canada. Should we be spending money in case these events come to pass as well.
It’s perfectly reasonable to assume that world events might throw up something unexpected that changes the course of things entirely. Look at 9/11. On 10th September 2001, there might have seemed a case for massively downgrading all the armed forces in the West; after all, the cold war had been won and there were no threats that wouldn’t take years to develop…….or where there?
In the 1920s we thought there would be no future wars in Europe and we know how that went.
I’m not saying that we should become out and out militarists, but developing an aircraft that allows us to take on the best, should we need to, is just prudent, its and insurance policy you don’t want to have to use. Would you rather need them and not have them?
Something that was raised on another website, the pic on page 8 of the aircraft in the snow is from the crash in 2001! 😀
Someone clearly doesn’t have a clue what they are doing!
So….UK should scrap the F-35 and fly this off the QE and PoW? :D:diablo:
Actually, just found this as well:
Yes, I know, it’s the daily mail, but bear with me…
apparently although the Queen receives £7.9 million a year, this is counterbalanced by the £226 million received by the treasury from the Crown Estates, the Queen’s private property.
