The Typhoon looks great in JASDF colours,I’ll bet the Rafale would look great as well.
If Japan renamed its forces ‘Imperial’, you can bet the PRC would go to defcon 2 the next day.
As i understood it, the current F-4 fleet is tasked mainly with air interception duties, retaining a limited strike role. The F-15E is bred from fighter stock, but it is a twin seater optimized for strike.
I believe that the JASDF would be better off with a fighter that has a more limited strike capability, such as Rafale or Typhoon. After all, they already have the F-2 as a good strike platform
Handbags at 10 paces!!!
Lets all just discuss the typhoon shall we? I know its easy to be dragged into flaming, but it won’t get us anywhere and the thread will just get deleted.
Back to topic, i think that listing the competitors for the JASDF new fighter would be a good place to start:
F-15E derivative (Not really what they are looking for)
F-22 (discounted – not allowed for export)
F-35 (unable to be delivered within timeframe)
F-2 upgraded
EF2000
Rafale
Gripen
Su-35 (unacceptable politically)
So what do we think is most likely and why?
I guess the RoKAF will opt for the F-15K, it would make more sense given that they are already operating the type, and politically it would be acceptable.
Even with the F-15K they can dominate air power on korean peninsula.
The source (Lancashire Post) mentioning possible sale to S.Korea is interesting. Strange that i can’t find any reference to it on the Eurofighter website?
Is the RoKAF even in the market for new planes in addition to the F-16 and F-15s they fly? Would 20 airframes even be a worthwhile ammount to procure?
Its a darn good photo there, any closer and the pilot can pick up a drive-thru order! 😀
Wasn’t this for air-refueling trials?
Why would a JASDF order be so surprising?
It has many elements that the Japanese would find useful, such as a willingness to let partners set up their own production lines, capability and all within time to retire the F-4EJ. Next to Rafale (which as far as i know hasn’t been marketed in Japan), it is the best option out there in terms of capability.
Seriously though, i heard that in 1982 there was talk behind closed doors of loaning the RN a CVF, does anyone have concrete info on this?
Frankly, this American would be damn dissapointed if we didn’t sail down there with a CVN and whatever other “toys” you chap’s needed.
That goes for this other trouble you’re having right now, too 😀Matt
Matt for President! 😀 😀
No.
I’ll bet those that haven’t already been scrapped have been sold on or used for spares or something, the British government is very forward thinking in these matters you see.
But you never know, our ‘special relationship’ with the US may convince them to loan a CVF and some super Hornets? 😀 😀
Just out of interest, where did you hear that?
Wait, let me guess, Foofone told you? 😀 😀 :diablo:
Typhoon has got multiple racks for the brimstone, i imagine one will be developed for bombs if the need arises. Is there any indication a typhoon nation will buy SDB?
I imagine it would be only a software and interface issue in the main.
In any case it wouldn’t let anyone know about the missile’s performance.
There are some very talented groups in the UK at the moment, they always seem to slip through the net though
I guess this is the problem when you leave the choice up to the majority of people. It should be properly discussed by learned people to reach a logical conclusion, like here……
