    Nice one Chris,
Interesting effort. I always liked these pre-war aero shows. Quite the period pieces.

Why should Chris ‘be careful’ because someone else might undertake shoddy research? Let’s remember we are all responsibe for our own errors. If someone chooses to fool themselves that this is a genuine pre-war colour photo, then they get the results they deserve. We all make mistakes, blaming others for our own shortcomings is poor show. Chiz.

    Or were you joking? 😀

Of course it’s speculativve, but it looks good to me – I hope a Spitfire experten will be along shortly for more qualified comment.

Chris, what process / program did you use?

Yes, that’s what I meant! It looks so good that you could be fooled into thinking it was a real colour photo. I really meant that ‘others’ have to be careful not to accept it as such, in case someone uses it as a reference where no colour photo exists! Speculation is a dangerous thing if taken seriously!

Yes indeed, both ‘ZXK and ‘ZYN were at Farnborough 1972 and were technically owed by BAC for demo purposes prior to delivery. I guess ‘ZXJ was a spare, but I never saw that one.

    Another spin on this story!!!
It appears, judging by this document here, that Sudan did receive Strikemasters.

According to the report, they had three aircraft, which would leave seven out of the ten undelivered.
JJK’s article states that Ecuador express an interest in buying up three aircraft from the embargoed Sudan order, then another three aeroplanes later.
The Sultan of Oman Air Force get one Mk.90 as a replacement for a lost Mk.82 aircraft.

    Is that the answer?

Hmm, I’m wondering if these ‘three’ are 3 of the remaining Jet Provost T.55s?
Seems strange there were no photos taken of them, either by BAC or by enthusiasts before delivery? Can’t believe they were wheeled out, started up and delivered at night without anyone seeing them?

    Like the VN799 scheme??? :D:D:D

Oh smart arse…it’s ‘working life’. Whatever next, repaint aircraft in film schemes? 😮

The Midland Counties BEAGLE book is ISBN 0 904597 00 8 published in 1974 and is a complete production history and a much treasured item in my library.
    Good Luck finding one!

I agree with Web Pilot. It’s NOT the original ‘VN799’, it’s a T.4, the wrong shade of blue and the roundels are the wrong proportion. If it’s going to be preserved, it should be put back into its delivery scheme of natural metal with yellow T-bands, or a scheme the actual aircraft wore during its life.

VERY good…but colouring in an old b/w photo can only be speculation as to the correct colour. Be careful in case someone uses this as a reference for a model as some people can be very particular over their shades of blue

I’m afraid that I don’t know who these folks are, but you get the impression they know their old aeroplanes don’t you? 😀

(One of the 1994 shows, sorry not sure which one at the moment)

That’s John Blake doing the commentary – one of the best! 😉

Lovely shots Niall. Interesting to see the Druine Turbi in the flying display.

I spoke to Tim Manna about his Seafire a couple of weeks ago, the main hold up is the supplied Aileron Cables were too long, but too short to chop and re-terminate. They have been waiting 16 weeks for replacements now, which has prevented the refitting of the wings, and hence missed it’s appointment with the Paint Shop in May…..
Apparently there were 3 different wing sizes fitted to Seafires (based on MK5 Spit), and it is very difficult to know which one you have until you get the parts and try to fit them…..

I also visited Tim Manna’s Seafire a couple of weeks ago and took some close-up photos, but they asked me to keep them to myself. It looks pretty complete apart from painting and is hoped to fly before the end of the year.

The York is MW100/G-AGNV taken at Staverton with the Skyfame Collection. Looking at the condition of the paintwork, I would say around 1970-71 before it was moved to Cosford

    David,

In your list, you make no note of G-AIDN being light blue at any time. It was in this scheme with Air Race code ’99’ between around 1959-68. Here is a shot of it I took over Staverton on 31st March 1968, whilst formating with The Skyfame Museum’s Airspeed Oxford V3388/G-AHTW (well, someone had to!)

    Ow! That’s horrible!

If you’d like a decent Auster kit, there’s a 1/48 scale kit of an Auster III by Sword. I supplied some of the references for the patternmakers, and backing up some of the comments above, sales were disapointing, hence no further kits have been released to date.

Thats’ a great shame as I bought one and have been patiently waiting for the long-announced 1/72nd scale version to be released, but it looks like they’ve abandoned it? 😮 This was a nice 1/48th kit of the Auster Autocar made by Lincoln International in the ’50s and later released by Kadar in the ’70s. I built two of these, one as G-AOIY and one as G-ARUG. Shame it’s now so rare (one just went on e.bay for around £40!).
