I have talked to many people who experienced the Manchester blitz over the years and one story sticks in my mind:

A young lad known to one witness wanted to do his bit and volunteered as a fire-watcher. His post was on top of one of the big mills and unfortunately it was hit and no trace of him could be found at first. The next day they found him two streets away, dead and completely naked, but without a mark on his body – I think he was sixteen and unfortunately the witness could not recall his name.

My wife’s grandfather volunteered as a fireman during the war as his religious beliefs meant he was a non-combatant. He was posted to Manchester right at the start of the blitz and I know he saw many terrible scenes and they affected him badly and he could never bring himself to talk about them – I still have his uniform buttons that he gave me – a sadly mute testament to the blitz, as he died several years ago.

nothing to admire about the mean-spirited little people who sit on their broad buttocks, comfy at home, and criticize the enormous efforts of a group of volunteers who have done a huge amount of work trying to solve the Earhart mystery.

Think you need to look at your audience here – there’s an awful lot of people on here who do a huge amount of work to ensure that historic aircraft are actually preserved for future generations. Not to mention those here with amazing knowledge that they are always willing to share and who do fantastic amounts of research, both for publication and often on behalf of the relatives of those who fought and died. Then there are those of us who regularly get off our backsides to search out and excavate crash sites and solve equally challenging if not quite so famous mysteries.

I won’t make any further comments on the merits or otherwise of TIGHAR’s activities, although I do think their methods obviously don’t sit well with how most group’s on this side of the pond operate, I think its up to everyone to make up their own minds.

BTW – re the Welsh P-38 (I hate that crass name, so am not using it) does anyone actually know if they have renewed the licence? From experience it is not as simple as it sounds as they would have to repeat the whole process each time & obtain consent from all involved parties – I would have thought that the local officials involved would be getting a bit fed up by now & I feel perhaps the “representative in Wales” has been a little unfairly portrayed (if it is who I think it is) and is also more than a little disillusioned now.

Well they certainly crammed a lot in one half hour programme – two digs in 30 mins – we were spoilt, though of course I would like to have seen a bit more of them – Still that’s TV – well done to all involved – its on the HD player now, so will watch it again later 😀

At last some good news! At least one of the major airframes has found an appreciative home.

Thanks Bruce, wasn’t sure if that was still the correct avenue. Does Father Christmas do aircraft transport and logistics solutions do you know?

Only involving sleighs and reindeer 😉 and it will stake more than that to shift this Canberra! BTW I understand the engines are still in situ i.e. still in the cut-off wings 🙁

All I wish to say is get your facts right before you sling stuff around in public… a forum is a debating place and a source interest and info!…make it so!

We like FACTS!!! …..Especially ones that are correct!!

I take it this is aimed at me? I don’t see anything accusative about my post and think your reaction is more than a little overboard, I was merely trying to help out here and pass a message on to persons unknown to me – and thereby give whoever it was the opportunity to sort it out ASAP i.e. before the end of the auction, I knew that the seller had an account on this forum because he tried to promote the auction on here, but the thread was removed, hence I was not sure who it was & could not initially contact them direct.

I also made no further comment – as I clearly said – as it was not my place to do so. The representative of Dodd & Co was, however, quite clear – they had no information that items on the museum site were being offered for sale and wanted to contact with the seller ASAP and this was what I was trying to assist them to do. My post was placed in good faith and I kept to the basic facts as I was given them.

Re the following two items currently on fleabay:

“Hawker Siddley HS748 cockpit nose section”
“Westland Whirlwind Mk 9 airframe Royal Navy”

I had a phone call from Dodd & Co. this afternoon – the company responsible for overseeing the liquidation of the former RAF Millom Museum – they asked if I could help put them in touch with the person calling himself “neiltheaviator” – so if anyone knows him or he is reading this please can he contact them immediately, as apparently they had no idea that someone was claiming these airframes and had not been informed of their attempted sale.

I won’t go into any more detail as I feel it is inappropriate for me to do so, but suffice to say that if anyone is bidding on these items you should perhaps be aware that their ownership may now be in dispute.

Missed this thread first time round, but here’s my belated contribution.

In addition, there was the ball turret, lots of propeller blades and radials…

Later on, members of the Pennine museum also visited the yard & spoke of the now diminishing huge pile of scrap & crawling into the fuselage of one aircraft – they had several of the prop blades – looked pretty rough to me – steel & off P-47s IIRC. Also they had a Wright? radial engine that I seem to recall took some negotiating to secure – they thought it was B-17, but I think it was later identified as being from a tank? – it was rough! Finally they had some form of periscope sight, which again IIRC, came from the B-26.

The same group also attempted to excavate a quarry in the area that had reportedly been filled with scrap from Burtonwood & capped off – at the limit of the digger’s reach they hit corrugated iron & railway sleepers and faced with the cost of hiring the machine a further day to ramp it in, they gave up – later another witness told how sleepers had been used to cover the aircraft engines etc to stop them being dug up later – Its now a housing estate…..

Slightly off topic – but still in your ‘neck of the woods’ for us down south – are stories of many surplus US WW2 aircraft ending up buried at Warton – on the Wirral side I understand…

There are many rumours re buried scrap at Warton – from the ubiquitous crated Harley Davidson’s to crates of 20mm 😮 No doubt there is no smoke etc & I have spoken with many older locals who have outlined credible stories of what they saw buried – No complete aircraft though! Also seen some very interesting earthmoving going on in some late war aerial photos – BTW all on the Blackpool side of the estuary – there would have been no access or point to dumping anything on the other side. There was however an massive open-air store of material on the Southport side along the main A565, though this was all removed.

There was a Waco CG-4 fuselage on Warton’s perimeter till the early 1960s…

Also during talks with locals, the Hadrians dumped on the marsh side of the airfield have been mentioned several times – local lads used the wings to make rafts which they used on the river.

Whilst on the subject of scrapyards, does anyone remember the yard sale at a scrappy near Preston around the same time? It had been advertised in Flypast so there were a few folk there viewing the lots. There was a complete, inhibited Merlin 61 or 66 on a stand which went for, if I remember correctly, about £1,200…

Yes remember the sale, but couldn’t get leave from work to attend + I was broke (as usual at the time!) It was also reported in the local papers & the auctioneers were surprised at the interest – seem to recall the Merlin went for over £2000 which also caused a further article in the local press – I recall it as we were negotiating a dig locally & the landowner had attended the sale & wanted £1000 to let us dig, which he thought was fair, as the engine we were likely to find must be worth at least half what he had seen one sold for 😡

    I have the prop too!

The Defiant Prop was a Bracket type D.H. Three blade, variable-pitch – i.e. Bracket type too – so not sure if that helps?

Yes my workshop needs tidying! Note: the car to the left is suposed to have appeared in the Battle of Britian film!

Not sure if you can tell the aircraft type from the limitations plate?

But here is a Boulton Paul Defiant one for comparison (apologies for focusing – macro packed in :()

    Guide prices

Yes the guide price is cheap – if you look, so are most of them in the catalogue – my first job was in an auction room and compiling the catalogues was one of my duties. This was standard auction house practise to drum up interest and get bidders to attend the auction – wouldn’t have thought it was quite so important now these things are on the net as well – But it certainly seems to still work! :diablo:

“…sound archaeological principles”….?? I take it you have never been to an aircraft recovery/dig, then? :diablo:

    Definitely 😉

As for Phil Harding – think he must have learned his lesson by the time they did our dig & I have to say he was the most likeable & by far the most easy to get on with of the whole lot – He ended up covered from head to toe in filthy black mud – Now that’s “Aviation Archaeology”!!! 😀
