Why don’t they just bite the bullet and admit they were wrong?

“yes it makes the most sense for Canada to buy F-35 even if we don’t intend to bomb faraway countries — we are a partner, we pay the annual fee, we must buy a US fighter” etc, etc

Maybe they want to have them fully operative ina lesser time than Norway so they would employ a greater number of them as trainer.
Usaf made the same with the temporary OCU wing of F-22 based in New Mexico, now moved in Florida and transformed into a normal one.

Another explanation suggested to me is that part of the Norwegian training is done in Norway not in the US (i.e. basic training done in the US and the rest is done in Norway); and perhaps the Danes do also their “advanced” training in the US.

Five of the 27 Danish F-35 will remain in the US and be used for training, thus 22 will be based in Denmark.

Norway will have more than twice the number of a/c based in Norway (48) however will have only 4 training a/c based in the US.

It is not clear why the Danes need such a huge number of training a/c (compared to Norway).

A spokeswoman for Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan said Monday the government hasn’t made any decision on fighter-jet procurement and “any suggestion to the contrary is incorrect.”

Canada is nonetheless still “faced with an unacceptable capability gap when it comes to our fighter jets,” spokeswoman Jordan Owens said by e-mail, declining to indicate a timeline for a procurement decision. “We’ve made very clear commitments to replace the CF-18s with an aircraft that matches Canada’s defense needs. Those commitments remain firm.”

so no decision yet it seems.

I have just read an article about future acquisition for Polish AF and Poles clearly outline they simply can’t afford the F-35s and are eyeing to get more new-built F-16Vs(?) instead.. With Block 52 costing around $100mil nowadays there is simply no chance in hell the F-35 would cost $90 as claimed.. It just does not add up..

    Is this the one?

Gurzeda also expressed support for Poland to procure more F-16s come 2025, when the country’s Mig-29s are scheduled to retire from service.

“I think for us, it is the best to buy the F-16,” Gurzeda said. “I think F-35 is too expensive for us and we don’t have logistics to service it. I think if you are thinking about the next plane, this is F-16.”

    http://www.defensenews.com/story/defense-news/2016/06/03/poland-f-16-sustainment-aesa-radar/85350178/

In a way it would make a lot of sense to switch to an all-F-16 air force and not operate two different types. Since the Polish F-16 are quite new then it may be better to get more F-16 instead of operating a mix of F-35 and F-16.

One alternative though could potentially be to sell of the F-16 and switch to F-35. However the number of a/c would then probably drop quite significantly.

Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha will embark on a five-day visit to Sweden, starting tomorrow, to take the existing defence cooperation between the armed forces of the two countries to the next level.

The CAS will also be visiting a flying base of the Swedish Air Force and the production facilities of SAAB, Swedish aerospace and defence company, at Linkoping where Gripen aircraft are manufactured.

Interesting — seems that Saab may still be a contender in India?

has this been confirmed by other sources? Perhaps this is just wrong and Canada has no intention of purchasing SH as an interim solution.

WASHINGTON — Despite worries that the new F-35 would be louder than the Netherlands’ F-16s, recent testing has shown Dutch residents don’t hear much of a difference.

During comparative noise testing of a Dutch F-35 and an F-16 late last month, residents near Leeuwarden and Volkel, the two Dutch air bases that will receive the F-35, found the Joint Strike Fighter only slightly louder.

“The results were actually the same as what we expected. The people said, ‘Okay, it’s a bit louder but not that much louder,’” said Lt. Col. Sidney Plankman, chief of public affairs for the Royal Netherlands Air Force, or RNLAF. “’If this is it, there’s no problem for us to live with.’”

Odd; in Norway the air force spends a fortune compensating people living close to the airport. But then again, Norway is a very odd country in many ways so perhaps this is not odd after all?

I guess one of the reasons LM and P&W were chosen were because they had already developed a 5th gen fighter and a 5 gen engine. With all that experience and existing technology one should assume that developing “another” 5. gen fighter should not be so horribly expensive.

It’s a bit like if somebody first develops a 4. gen fighter and then moves on to developing a 4.5 gen fighter, I would think… ? 🙂

Gripen, Rafale, Typhoon On Malaysian MRCA Wishlist

Malaysia is in the final stages of studying companies that meet the Royal Malaysian Air Force’s (RMAF’s) multirole combat aircraft (MRCA) requirement to replace its ageing MiG-29 fighter aircraft.

“Our focus is on a multi-role combat aircraft (MRCA) capable of performing various roles, among others, the role of air-to-air combat and air-to-surface attack,” he said.
Asked whether the RMAF would be purchasing new aircraft, he said the air force was now identifying several types of fighter aircraft among them the Gripen, Rafale and Typhoon.

The Slovak Ministry of Defence (MoD) has announced it is rejecting the latest offer for the lease of eight Saab Gripen fighter aircraft made by the Swedish government.

“For me it is unacceptable how the Swedes are negotiating with us from a legislative and legal perspective. The asking price is also unacceptable”, recently appointed Slovak defence minister Peter Gajdos told the Slovak-language daily SME .

    however:

Sources close to the Slovak MoD say this may simply be a tactic to pressure Sweden to lower the price on its bid to lease aircraft.

No offense Loke, but you have got to use a little more sense with your sources. Look at the page and plug some of the information into google translate about who made this page, who funds it (advertising). This is the equivalent of the “editor’s” comments on Defense-aerospace. You keep linking to these negative articles on sites funded by the F-35’s competitors, complete with editors that make no bones about their bias.

And no, it is not a double standard, when I link and article from SLD info I make it clear that site is partially funded by L-M and have a definite positive bias. In no way is this a defense of Denmark’s evaluation (I think it is clear that evaluation used figures and assumptions to put the F-35 in the best possible position to win). We don’t need the bias opinion of a blog to discuss the Denmark study when the actual study is out there to read, interpret, and discuss.

Did you look carefully at that blog? ALL THREE of the competitors are having ads — yes there is also an ad from LM there.

The writer of that blog is taking great pride in being critical of all the competitors — if anything he is considered to be more positively biased towards the F-35 than the other two, he has had a lot of positive news and articles about the F-35 and has been very critical of SH and Typhoon.

You can for instance look at what he has written on Boeing previously: http://nytkampfly.dk/archives/8376 and: http://nytkampfly.dk/archives/8295 and: http://nytkampfly.dk/archives/8259

You say “it is clear that evaluation used figures and assumptions to put the F-35 in the best possible light to win” — actually several very active posters here seem to disagree on that and seem to believe the assessment was unbiased.

The finding that Denmark can make do with 27 fighter jets based in part on figures from McKinsey, which it has not been possible to ascertain where the consultants are from, and figures that it has not been possible to validate.

No insight into where the numbers come from and no way to validate the numbers. Never mind, we use them anyway!

The report also includes a number of other optimization measures such as allowing the pilots to be deployed longer, work longer hours when they are at home and be actively flying in far more years than today. Overall it seems that the report by crook trying to make reality to be getting together that one can justify to buy only 27 aircraft. Figures for the annual flying hours, which is based on a thin base and working for the future pilots who probably will not do the job satisfaction higher, are the most glaring examples.
