From what I have seen, the Visby’s are to have the helo in a standard hanger aft of the bridge, though I do remember there some talk about a lift lowering the helo down into a hanger below. What I always find interesting is the idea of teloscopic hangers like what the Russians have on some of their ships, IIRC the Lurssen ships used by the UAE have this function, I may be wrong about that though.

How big are the new OPC’s that the RNZN are getting? They have a helo on board?

Thanks Castor: it is sad how dirt gets flung around during a comp, and to have it going after the victor has started delivery is just stupidity. The looser lost, that’s it, end of story! They should bow out gracefully and await their next chance. This goes to say a lot about that certain company and it’s attitude doesn’t it?

So anyway what’s happening on the South African front?

Steve: thanks for the link, I’ve been looking for it for a long time, it doesn’t come up on any search down here.

MPA: Mate that looks like it’s been added on after and covered with canvas, how odd. But that helo couldn’t be permanently deployed to that ship surely, the tail sticks out, they couldn’t close the hanger off from the elements should the need to work on the tail section and it’s raining.

Terran: Visby is in no way small, think tiny mate

Radar: interesting, they are more what I am looking for to answer my question, 630t is tiny, but are the helos permanently deployed? Is there a hanger for them?

it would take alot of pressure off the attack carriers and would be more responsive to the training needs of the Navy.

Yes it would, but you think about it first mate, having those carriers means money for the Navy budget, start cutting the fleet and you’ll start reducing their budget. Even if you have one training carrier dedicated, you reduce the budget for the attack carriers.

Doubt it mate, she’s just about ready to go for another cruise. She did a 20 Day stint of the coast of Norway last November and is about to go for a bigger trip this time, on an international visit, possibly including Portsmouth, but she is heading for the Mid Altantic this time. Well that’s what I heard, the Russians are very angry at having her sitting around and she is too new and important to be disposed of so soon (the Russian public are actually proud of it).

If anyone was to buy her, it would come down to either India or China, India would put up a high price in an attempt to out bid China who actually has the funds to make one of their own, maybe that’s why they bought her sister (odd that nothings been heard of her since she made homeport- and all info regarding her is restricted now- so much foir the hotel theory).

Oooo draging up our history mate, and on Anzac day, great call.

Yes AE-2 did it back then but back then there weren’t as many navigational hazards as there are today, not to mention that AE-2 didn’t go all the way through.

In the book, the kilo and later the Upholder travel through the entire channel underwater (somewhat hazardesly almost coming acropper with various local ferries and some merchant ships).

AE-2 did it at nine phathoms, not very deep but still technology back then wasn’t anywhere near as it is today. nor was she as big as either of the ships being talked about. Can’t imagine either type going at nine phathoms, they’d be spotted for sure!

Anyway, does either of the Boats have the responciveness and agillity to make such quick turns? Back in our O boats and certainly with our Collins, I know for sure that they don’t!

D’oh. Maybe I should look more closly at the pick, silly me, still that’s what comes of age and having a full week end with my daughters!!!
