🙁
If a Westland Whirlwind (Fighter, NOT helecopter) was to be built from scratch, would it be possible in theory to fit merlins (with a modified cooling arrangement) instead of the rather rare Perigrines…
Fraid not, being that the Whirly was built around the Peregrines it would have to have had a major refit to cope with a couple of Merlins… It was, if I remember correctly, said by Westlands that they could refit the Whirly with Merlins, but there has never been any data to say how they were to do it… American engines, although again, type not specified, were also put up to save the beast and the Napier Dagger was also a contender…
So, you would either have to, pinch the one that R-R Derby has in their museum and then fabricate another or find something around the size and power of the Peregrine and use that… I personally would not mind if someone would build a replica using modern day composits and anything thing else that could get something very much like a Whirlwind back up in the air… 😉
then why hot use the motor’s that the peregrine was developed from kestral’s as there seem’s to be a few lying around in afganastan:eek:,with the new build and no miltary equipement kestrals should power it quite nicely:diablo:

now i have the plan all i need is the money(i wish)
as to the hp42 wasn’t there a second group hoping to build one as well?
i hope it get’s preserved in this scheme she looks awsom:diablo: .
paul
the bottom aircraft is a tu2 used during late ww11 the chinese were useing them till the 80’s to break up thick ice in rivers:eek: with their cannon’s
paul
ps i belive that kermit weeks has a couple of these and there maybe more in the states
i’d also like to add my voice, altho i live on the other side of the world i was very sadned by this loss of man and machine, one of the most beutifully restored and unique spit’s and from what i’ve heard and read a unique and friendly man,the world is a lesser place because of the loss of people such as this.
paul
there is also a kookaburra publication book on the whirlwind fighter but long out of production you maybe able to find one on ebay
paul
arent the nasa wb57 still classed as being in service as i thought i read at least one had been sent to afganistan?:diablo:
paul
are they going to bring the g59 out ?
First??it seems wrong. How about China’s WS-11 that has been in mass production for 3 years. Kunlun already in service(J-8F), WS-10A in the final 450 long term test. WS-6(1960-1980) very close to type approval.
wrong what about the ne-20 which was run before the end of ww11:diablo:
in saburo sakai’s biographie’s they claim a b32 after the offical end of the war iirc (will have to wait till i finish moving to confirm).
so aybe the last kill is from the other side:eek:
paul
i’d buy the whirlwind parts from mr visard and put it back in the air:diablo:
when youve got connies who needs dc6’s:diablo:
Paul the Nasa 747SP is ex United Airlines, both QF 747SPs were parted out in the US, I hope they put Rollers on instead of the pratts or GEs that are probably on it!
As to the DC-4 here in OZ rumor has it that this old bird is to be restored to flight status and painted in WARBIRD colours. Not sure what that means? USAF maybe. ANyways who cares as long as she flys hey? And besides another DC-4 in OZ cant be bad? I just hope QANTAS spend the money on some sort of super hanger for all these old birds soon, seems a shame for them to be outside when they are in such good nic.
thanks for the news dave,i only saw the dc4 fly once when it came to melbourne for the essondon airport anniversary a few years ago looked pretty cool in formation with the connie, ansertes and mike falls dc3 over the city centre:diablo: .
i also hope that they build a hanger for all of these birds.
but after these whats next?and how would they get a sunderland out there 😀
paul
there’s a dc4 in need of a good home already in oz why not buy that one?
