How about the Tirpitz raids, even using Tallboys the chances of hitting the target where quite slim given the technology of the day.

Mind you after doing a quick google, I’m not sure if precision or luck played the major role in the 3 raids

At the end of the war a total of 854 “Tall Boy” bombs had been dropped, of which 77 were dropped in the three attacks on the Tirpitz in September, October and November of 1944 alone. In the first attack, two direct hits on the bow was achieved, in the second only a near miss. In the decisive third attack there were three direct hits and one near miss. At the third attack, 12. November 1944, Tirpitz capsized and had to be written off as a total loss.

Admittedly not Africa, however Afghanistan is turning up a number of airframes, especially of the Hawker Biplane variety, which were mentioned in Fly Past last year (I believe). The difficulty with recovering the said airframes is that they lie in the middle of a pile of scrapped modern relics, which are mined and booby trapped.

Well personally I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, I hope if/when it does take to the air your flying pigs will be happy to fly in formation with XH558, and that you have plenty of salt to hand to go with your edible hat 🙂

    VERY touchy subject. 🙁

    You can say that again.

One chap even demanded I arrange to have the aircraft sent back, even though I explained repeatedly that I was just undertaking freelance research and was not connected to the owners in anyway

Sorry these guys were/are prepared to appear on TV, and say that their project will be flyhing within 12 months, they seem to have cleared many hurdles to get this far, and were very convincing.

So what makes you think that it won’t be gracing the skies this time next year, are you party to something the rest of us aren’t ? Or is it pure conjecture.

Watch out for those Canadians, when I tried to find out more about HAC’s Hurricane I was sent hate emails and letters from some rather irate people. You’ve been warned.

    Glenn,

I spent a happy while in your website yesterday swotting up on the stuff for the commentary. It is a good site and I will do my best to say good tings about the project.

I get to have a beer with your old man too.

I just popped in to see whether things had improved.

Of course not, but we can hope. I guess unless we introduce some reference to Hysteric Aviation this thread will be consigned to GD by the Stasi !!!

Sorry to drag this out of the archive, but there were two chaps interviewed on our local TV station, a Sqd Ldr and a Dr (Robert Pleming !!!) , who reckon that XH558 will be in the air by this time next year and gracing the skies over St Aubin’s Bay, Jersey on September 14 2006. That’ll please the present Mrs EN830, it will be our 15th Wedding Anniversary and I’ve already told her that I am having the Red Sparrows brought over especially.

I’ve just spent forty quid on cleaning materials for the forthcoming “Chain-gang” season, does that count?

I thought you were in exile ????

Has this outlay got anything to do with us whooping the ozzies arses ?????

Well to show that I was not going to take that Ozzies money that easily, though it was like taking sweets from a baby. I’ll chuck a tenner to The Shuttleworth Collection in celebration of a monumentous victory.
