While most of the filming for BoB was done in UK there were one or two occasions when some of the air-to-air “rushes” were not perfect. Some episodes required to be re-shot. For this the cloud conditions had to be the same as on the original footage. The Film Fellers were prepared to take the whole shootin’ match as far away as Norway to replicate the correct cloud conditions. Whether or not they actually did this I know not, but I do know that the Met Office at RAF Mildenhall (yes, RAF – not USAF) did most of the air-to-air forecasts. I was there.

They went to Spain via Jersey. Ironically there is a picture in this evening local paper of a Buchon landing at Jersey airport in 1968.

I spent an afternoon at the airport on the 20th after sitting an exam in the morning. Jersey’s heyday as an airport was back in the 70’s when at times it was considered to be the third busiest in the world with a flight every 1 1/2 mins, however the cheap package deal put paid to the tourist trade and the number of flights has significantly declined. Recently we have seen a minor influx of budget operators, mainly Thomsonfly who are now operating from Coventry and Luton to Jersey. BMIBaby have recently introduced a twice daily service to Heathrow. Our French connections are carried out by TwinJet and Aurigny. Blue Island have a plan to fly to Paris in the not too distant future.
My afternoon was spent practicing panning and shutter speeds for far more interesting historic subjects next month, the main types passing through were GA, and a few scheduled flights. The French eggbeater was an unusual addition.
Unfortunately Melvyn’s last attempt to sneak a cargo into the country came a cropper on the south coast of England, as this photo shows.
