I agree with the above posts – the weight gain of painting an aircraft is considerable – think of the weight of a 5 litre tin of paint! Aerodynamics are affected too.

There is another reason for the lack of camo too – late in the war, air superiority had been gained and so US aircraft (In theory at least) pretty much had the skies to themselves (I’m sure the guys that were there would completely disagree!). There would have been no need for high altitude aircraft (B29, etc) to have camo…..

Thats what I’ve been taught anyway……

Thank you all for the paint info – I think that should suit our needs.

While on the subject of TT18’s, does anyone know of a decent pair of pylons lying around? Ours are killing themselves from the inside, and IMHO they need replacing.

Are there any drogue units going spare also?

And finally, does anyone know if the drogue spotlights (fitted to the engine cowl) were a ‘make do’ job using truck headlights? Were all TT18’s fitted with them?

    Again, thanks in advance

That is indeed an ex St Mawgan 7 Sqn aircraft, and was there until at least Aug 1980, would be great to see it in its originals colours.
It looks like the camo on it now has been applied in the wrong shades (could be the pic?).
Also dark sea and extra dark sea grey fades, especially, as in the case on the TT.18s, the aircraft were left outside near the sea. I know this has led to all sorts of debates on the finish of FAA aircraft. Ideally you need pics of freshly painted aircraft or the paint specs.
Where was it before you obtained it?

I may be wrong (and usually am) but I think the aircraft was disposed of by the RAF straight to NEAM (dismantled and roaded in) not long after the airfield (Sunderland) closed in 1984. Its current camo colours were re-applied about 4 years ago, so it appears that it has faded rather quickly. The plan is to keep it in the camo scheme rather than the earlier grey and dayglow. The yellow and black undersides are original. The camo paint is flaking off, so perhaps a good key was not achieved – not my place to say really, but it will all be coming off for the re-paint in due coarse. Our Vulcan has the same paint applied on part of the wing and you can see where the roller marks are due to the fading – both aircraft are permanently outside and are looking very tatty now. If we can perform a good re-paint, they should be presentable for a few years at least.

I have heard that the yellow is the same shade as applied to SAR Sea Kings – is this true?

Getting the paint spec numbers is the whole point of this thread, especially for the green, grey and yellow.

dave – good idea, but are the shades used on the mossie 100% accurate for a canberra?

Try spadeadam ranges in northumberland, UK – the mock airfield is about five miles north of the main site and has T33’s and Mysteres on it. No bomb craters though……

However I have to disagree with Lindys Lad, currently you do not have to hold a part 66 to certify these aircraft. Until September 2008 you can still certify under BCAR A/B/C/D licences. Whilst at AV, EASA conducted a number of visits to watch the operation for the purposes of Annexing aircraft (warbird) types. The effects of which will come in after 09/2008, hopefully not for the detriment of the restoration movement.

Sorry, forgot about BCARS still being around — you’ll have to convert to part 66 soon though! I’m a fitter, so what do I know…lol

Sheety fitters are in high demand and are well looked after by companies!

Agreed – in a restoration company there will be at least one guy with the required licence (for aircraft under 5200KG new rules under EASA are coming in…). The rest of the workforce can be anyone from volunteers to pilots. Providing that the lead engineer is suitably qualified (Pt 147 training course, 2 years in industry before gaining an EASA pt 66 B1 or B2 or even a C licence, followed by the required type courses – read as 5 years MINIMUM to get all this), and experienced (!) then he can sign of a monkey’s work if it is good enough. This guy is responsible for the aircraft legally, and can face a lengthy term in prison if mechanical faults cause the loss of a machine or pilot

YOU could build a spitfire having worked on a pig farm all your life, and providing the pt66 engineer signs your work as good, then you have built an airworthy aircraft. (subject to CAA / EASA approval too – complicated subject area….)

I have been employed as a contractor by Air Atlantique helping on the Lancaster Major over last winter. I personally just scraped into the job by way of my volunteering at various museums over the last 15 years. I was RAF airframes for 7 years, cross trained to propulsion, followed by a 2 year EASA pt147 course, Foundation degree, and so far 1 year as a contractor working on anything from Lancasters to Airbus A320’s, with a spattering of 747 and A300 into the bargain. I don’t have a licence, and don’t need one. Other fitters who I have worked with have no formal education – simply a few years as a volunteer at museums is often enough to land a contract job on live aircraft (although rarely!). Experience is key, and unusual trades are a bonus!

Having known Mr. Brown only as a name in the pages of magazines and as a friend of a friend, I can only re-affirm my condolences to his family, friends and all at Breighton. 🙁

All these radiation problems have come as quite a shock to me! I was away from preservation of statics for a long time, and so all this is new news to me. Its also slightly worrying since I worked on these engines during RAF training and EASA pt66 training…. (Got 2 kids, so it can’t be that bad). I have always been aware of the dangers of smashed instruments and GTLS bulbs, but provided they were still sealed behind glass, all was well. Apologies for my lack of knowledge on this subject… it certainly makes for interesting reading.

    Thanks for the info

thankyou for your comments ,over the years ive spoken to many informed people about the “its not a Lancaster” attitude its very much to the fore,(weather you choose to recognise it or not) a case of seen but not heard, incidentally ive no truck with lanc minded people at all ,however, the fact remains most individuals know that aircraft better than the Halifax thats fact and key to why W stays as she is caught up in a host of politics and policies(dont forget only one thats one halifax VC) with scant thought for the guys who flew the Halifax night in night out which is what that Halifax represents and the one at CWH, for the record ive been a hands on restorer/aviation archeologist/researcher since the early seventies, other countries are justly proud of their aviation heritage,in this country we are more selective with our aviation pride( that is also true of our attitude towards historic buildings which we tend to demolish then rue the day we did )thats why no intact Stirling exsists ,the first true four engine bomber initially designed as such but thats for another thread, 😎 😎

Unfortunately, Hendon’s Halifax is not going to be restored to anything resembling a whole aircraft for the forseeable future. As a preservationist, is it not more beneficial to stop complaining about what other people do with their aeroplanes (or in this case the population’s aircraft) and go find one in a Fjord…. the Canadians did, and look at what they found! 😎 Somewhere there will be another intact halibag probably a stirling too, just waiting to be dragged off the bottom of a lake and restored. Leave Hendon’s Halifax to Hendon, and dig out your snorkle….:D

To me, in the state it is in, it represents all those souls who DIDN’T make it back. I’d have left the barnacles on it too….
