And many thanks to whichever moderator changed the title of the thread. I tried for ages but couldn’t work out how to do it.

Replaced by Torbay on 3/4 June.

Torbay isn’t a replacement for Dawlish, it’s a new show and I hope it becomes as good as Dawlish. The Dawlish team are now hoping to run a show in 2018.

The annual event at Damyns Hall won’t have an air show any more and that’s a direct consequence of the fees and insurance increases and changes to regulation that place an impossible burden on the organisers of small shows.

Likeing it or loathing it won’t be a problem in Europe soon. Under the EU Firearms Directive weapons platforms will be banned, the way it’s been drafted will include warbirds, regardless if there’s any representations of guns, unless they’re in a government museum.

The UK government seems disinclined to ignore it even though there is scope for it not to be enacted in UK Legislation. Germany, which appears to have more reason than us to fear terrorism, has decided not to enact it.

I was sat in my office in the City of London on the phone to a colleague downstairs who was also interested in aircraft. Heard a strange noise outside, looked up then said to my colleague “I’ve juist seen a Sunderland flying over”. She didn’t believe me, then it came over again so I told her I’d seen it again and it was definitely a Sunderland. She started to come upstairs but she was too late for the fourth and final viewing. On my way home I walked over London Bridge and there was G-BJHS parked in the pool of London. Must have been circling making sure there was enough room to land (water?). It was there for a few days, you could go round her if you were willing to use the small boat from the river bank.

Years before that, 1968 I think, I was on one of those school cruises and we went through Lisbon docks. There in a compound was a heap of Harvards that we were told were from the Biafran Airforce.

Yes i agree with Aileron we should of put an airfield aside with hangars full of museum aircraft and associated exhibits a live runway restorded flyable aircraft able to use a runway plenty of airshows drumming up the money and perhaps 3 situated evenly up and down the country for the rest of the population to enjoy to visit. There could of been every type of aircraft represented on one of the three sites for example .

The main point of a Museum is to educate and entertain people. To do that people need to be able to reach it. Arguments about the contents and presentation aside, I think Hendon is a really good location. It has a bus service to the gate, tube and train lines nearby and a major road. In short, it’s accessible.

Most airfields have a bus, now and again if you’re lucky. Duxford isn’t too bad but you have to plan timings carefully. Try going to Middle Wallop or Yeovilton if you don’t drive.

Yes I know entertain is going to cause the sky to fall in but if it’s done properly it can be a way of educating.

This is the only photo that I have been able to find of a Siskin cockpit interior. It is a Siskin III. Of particular note is the area defined as a map box on the drawing (see previous post) that is being used for the CAV hand start magneto and a container (flask!?).
One of the two handles shown below the panel and centre is the Constinesco hand pump. I will guess that the other is the engine primer. I don’t like guessing!

If anyone has any other photos of the cockpit, please post.

    Regards
    John

The modelling book on the Siskin, can’t remember the name of the series but it was a blue covered softback, has a couple of photos and a drawing of the IIIA instrument panel and while the shape is broadly the same the instruments and locations are different.

I scaled up the drawing to make a resonably accurate copy for the first Cockpitfest. Might still have it somewhere

I store all my photos on external hard drives, each location has its own folder with the name of the location then the date in reverse order, e.g. 20161210. Within the folder, in windows explorer, I highlight all the photos then rename the first one with the same details as the folder name. This renames all the photos that are highlighted with those details, adding a numerical suffix to avoid duplicating file names.

Yes, why not take the law into your own hands, guys – get an axe or carving knife…go on, Eric said it is ok.

Just as well we don’t have freely available guns in Britain, eh?

They’re very freely available round here. Just not legally available. Two bunches of kids were recently blatting away at each other outside my daughter’s flat. A while back, my wife was working in the local theatre and and asked to be met after work because trouble was brewing. Sure enough, five people were shot that night, next day I saw bullet holes in a local restaurant opposite the theatre.

Neither event made the news though

dh82jon – my understanding regarding the colour of the paint on the Auster AOP 9 in Hangar 1, is either a rouge tin of paint,

    Is it pink too then?

    Sorry, had to be done

The most ridiculous things was deciding to put the RAF Museum at a site which wasn’t going to be an active airfield (Just because it HAD to be in London?)

If you’re trying to bring in and/or educate the general public, tourists, school parties etc, the last place you want to be is on an active airfield, it’s too remote and security can be an issue. What you want is a place that has room for expansion and is close to a major connurbation with good public transport links, like Hendon.

I’d like to see Aviaiton Heritage Centres near other major towns and cities but I’m not sure how viable that is. Places like Newark and East Fortune seem to do well do well but there aren’t many of them. Anyone know how IWM north does? Does it meet expectations in terms of visitor numbers?

3 types!…. you’re forgetting the armchair warriors/experts who even when not fully appraised of all the facts and finances and museum and governmental frameworks etc. can do a far far better job, but are unwilling to offer their time as a museum volunteer.

The third type aren’t personnel, although they can be very irritating.

I just wondered how many Percival Pembrokes/ Sea princes have survived? I recall seeing a lovely one at Duxford abut 15 years ago.

There was a Pembroke and two Sea Princes at the Gatwick Aviation Museum. Now, acording to their web site, they have only a Sea prince, WP308. Not sure where the other two went.

Rat Acc, I like the way you think. The half and half would be especially fascinating, and it would spark some interesting discussions and lead to a few unusual bits of history being learned. The paint scheme won’t ever happen except in the world of models, but it’s a fun plan of action.

The Spanish Air Force Museum near Madrid has a number of aircraft painted half and half to show that the types served on both sides in the civil war. It’s confusing to put it mildly until you realise what’s been done.
