Saw the practice fly over our office at Marham the other day, looked mighty impressive! I too had to do a double take at the 16 ship GR4 formation! Any ideas when (and if?) this was last done by GR’s?
An an Engineer it always inpresses me the bigger the formation.
4 ship = not bad, quite a regular occurance though.
Diamond 9 = taking it to the next level, only for special occasions!
16 ship = Tools down and look up!
I’d have probably had a heart attack if i’d seen the tewnty-something hunter loop all those years ago!
Congrats to all involved on the ground and in the air! I look forward to seeing it for real over the weekend.
How’s the restoration going scott? Is there a website where we can see your progress?
Perhaps a mod could post this thread as a sticky? I’ll only forget otherwise…
A sound idea seconded by myself!

I’d just like to wish the people involved with the possible relocation of this girl the best of luck with the move. I am sure there would be no shortage of both skilled and unskilled personel who frequent this forum that would offer their help free of charge. I would gladly help, and probably know a few others (all serving RAF members, like myself) who’d give up their time to help rehome this lightning.
Should a plan come together, please PM me and I’m there!
I feel embarresed slightly by never having heard of her, a fact I intend to correct. Autobiography is on it’s way curtosy of amazon.
Rest a while.

I’ve always though tha Valiant was quite a nice looking aircraft. Simple tried and tested design, which served the purpose it was designed for. Obvioulsly it’s delta and crescent winged counterparts attracted a good deal more attention, leaving the Valiant to carry on regardless, almost behind the scenes.
I do wonder though, if the metal fatigue in the main spars hadn’t existed, just how long their service life might have been? The Vulcans were retired in 1984 ish (apart from 558 obviously) and the Victor continued to serve until 1993, some 40+ years after the first flight from Radlett.
With the Valiant B2 pre-empting the need for a low level role, i suspect that had they not been scrapped when they were, they may well have outlived their V counterparts, perhaps even condeming them to an earlier grave! I can imagine the headlines now about them bombing the runway at Stanley and refueling fast jets in the gulf!
Thanks for the information chaps! As soon as I get some pictures I’ll make sure I post them here.
The provenance is there and air tight. The collector he got it from is a leading authority on German WWII memoribillia (unsure of his name) and he got it from the widow of the aforementioned ace, many years ago. He told me that a letter from the guy he got it from will more than cover prividence. Apparently it still even has his name tag sewn inside. I know, anyone could mimic this, but I have no reason to doubt it’s legitimacy!
It’s with my friends Uncle, Stateside at the moment, getting the badges sewn back on with authentic 1940’s cotton. I’m told that after WWII you couldn’t sell German uniforms with the badges still on. Thankfully they were removed and put into one of the pockets. I will post pictures here as soon as I can. From what I can understand he was one of Germany’s best and very highly decorated. I don’t understand the German medal system but I believe he was awarded the equivilent of the VC? Perhaps someone with more understanding and knowledge of the Luftwaffe could explain?
Many thanks to all who replied!
Interesting thought! Not sure he’d fancy the idea though!
Video capture card for your PC should do the trick, would love to see it!

Not seen it for years myself, look farward to laughing at it once more!
Brian. Some great photos of what can only be described like you stated as an “Alladin’s cave” of stuff! I could spend hours exploring and years restoring! If only it was closer to home!!
ok then here’s another one, see if you can tell where this is 😀
Judging by the way the paint looks around it, i’d say it was on the underside of the jet somewhere, belly perhaps? As to it’s purpose, not got a clue! Stab in the dark, some kind of fuel drain.
Top hole Mark!!
Under the skin this one though I still think I am being to easy….
John.
Looks like a actuator of some description to me. Also was inpressed that the panel you remove to access it it slightly smaller than the part itself! So Lightnings were dogs to work on, the rumours are true! Never been up close and personal with lightning so I’m guessing! I expect to be corrected by someone with more knowledge!!
