I’ve fiddled about with about 20 or more P51’s. I’d be hard pressed to tell you the N # of more than 2 of them…

…but thankfully the people that pay large amounts of money by attending air shows/air events, buying magazines, and everything else associated with the hobby of spotting contributes money to keep these companies going and people like you employed could probably tell you the Mustang numbers!
I find it slightly sad that you can’t remember 20 Mustangs, I think I can remember just about every aircraft (and usually the occasion) I’ve seen, both through my work and in my ‘spotting’ days.

Have to agree with Baz, in fact my interest was fuelled by a handful of people like him.:)

Don’t forget, that as in any hobby, it is the dedicated enthusiast at the grass roots that keeps the whole thing alive, for the general followers and public to enjoy. Would IAT/RIATs be run over four plus days without spotters? In fact would it attract the public at all if the hobby didn’t exist?

Probably my only issue is with those that just collect numbers/radio call signs without wishing to know anything about the aircraft or aviation, and in some cases without seeing the aircraft itself. However that could be a lack of understanding on my part.

The thing i don’t like is the type of posts we get here sometimes….you know the ones….’I know something you don’t’…..’but I wont tell you’…..wish they would just keep it to themselves.

In all the time I’ve been spotting I never realised that there was an orderly number system, always wondered what the WGAF numbers meant!

Seems an odd choice for civil fire fighter training, I would have thought that an airliner or small civil type hulk would have given a more encounterable and wider training experience for civil crews.
I would be surprised if it is set light to, after one or two burns it would be useless, and the MoD seems to have stopped the practice, not sure what the civil regs are with it.
