    Superb work above.
Must be even harder when not much of the airfield survives.

More likely it’s to cash-in by licensing the name to anyone willing to pay to slap it on a tacky plastic model made in china – either at 1:72 or 1:1 scale.

Too late, but not too tacky! ‘The Dambusters 617 Squadron RAF’ Lancaster & Dam! http://www.airfix.com/airfix-products/dioramas-and-figures/dioramas/a50061-the-dambusters-gift-set-a50061/

In all seriousness, Airfix are releasing a brand new tooling Dams Lancaster this year, best wait for this one, http://www.airfix.com/airfix-products/new-for-2013/aircraft-172-scale/a09007-avro-lancaster-dambusters-172-a09007/

She was very impressed and it made a nice day to see a non-aviation fanatic enjoying a day amongst RAF stuff and her memories.
It made me see the place in a new light.

You’ve hit the nail on the head, I read all these odd posts about how bad the RAF Museums are in various aspects, usually the building design, hanging aeroplanes, inappropriate types on display, poor lighting, or the Halifax being displayed in its recovered form.
However it’s when you walk around with a non enthusiast friend, or visiting witness veterans that you truely appreciate how these fabulous collections affect most people, and the memories that they take home with them.

I went around Hendon with my sister who hated aircraft when she was living at home (under the St Mawgan circuit), she was awstruck by the place and the design of aircraft precisely because of how they were presented.

    Fantastic pictures yet again Brian!

There’s an interview programme on now (21.06) on BBC4, apparently never seen before and filmed in 2007 with Patrick Moore. May touch on his RAF career, but should be interesting if not anyway.

I’m probably swayed by the film then, but the correct english would be two words, as they were busters of dams.
I was aware that 617 use ‘Dambusters’, but of course they are part of RAF PLC:D

Wasn’t there a similar event to this, when a Vulcan had been abandoned by its crew while it was heading out to sea over the NE, it then headed back in land and crashed on school fields?

I’ve only ever read it as ‘Dam Busters’, does that mean that ‘Dambusters’ can be soley used by the RAF because it’s the first attempt of trademarking it as one word?

It is possible that ‘funnel’ may have been used on the Drem pattern but that is a first for me.

Certainly in the early stages there were funnel lighting elements to the Drem system.

Hi Tim, was thinking about your Shack incident (WB861, Sep ’57?), it doesn’t seem that unheard of for the MR.1/T.4s to land with a complete, or one, gear not down even into the late MOTU years in the late 1960s.
Maybe a design weakness somewhere along the line?!
It didn’t seem to happen to the MR.2s so much, and of course the MR.3s had their bunch of nose gear failures at service entry.

The funnel system was WWII era really, as part of early Drem set up it was superceded by later Drem Mks possibly Mk3?
Many of the bomber and larger airfields would also have an outer ring (lead in) of lights on poles quite a distance out from the airfield that would guide the aircraft from either in a holding pattern, or just arived, to the funnels on runway approaches.

I always thought ‘Finals’ meant that all final checks to land (as per the Pilots Notes, checklists etc) had been completed in the cockpit and relayed to the controller – ie runway or lights in sight, switched to correct frequency, gear down, flaps at correct angle, and power settings correct for a landing.

I can’t see how ‘Dam Busters’ can be copyrighted, especially in light of it being a general term and possibly coined by popular press after the event.
I wonder if the MoD are so desperate that they are copyrighting the term before the film comes out, may generate some income for the coffers and pay for an extra helicopter.

I honestly think they must be using those lawyer and solicitor firms that you see advertising on day time commercial TV!

Is that you Steve? Apologies if not!
It’s a fascinating story, and the stuff of legend when I was growing up, more so than King Arthurs castle! Great link!

Thanks, there’s more to come from, and of, ATC SM, but my filing system is as erratic as BL Maxi in a rainstorm!

Wish I had Denis’ imagination and skills!
