Just out of curiosity, are these the same bulbs that fit in the old undercarriage indicators and panel pillar lights?
My favourite was a BBC one off called the ‘600 mph Men’, best docu I’ve ever seen about British post-war aviation, be great to get it on DVD.
Yes I think you might find that as redundant airfields get converted for housing etc, plans will be submitted for alternative use of some of the established ‘harder to demolish buildings’.
Excellent images, and thanks for sharing.
I’ve got to ask though, how did your father manage to keep images taken on his reccon missions?
We had a Luftwaffe reccon pilot visit St Athan about two years ago, and provided some fantastic images of the airfield.
Thanks for the explanations, I’m guessing the Luftwaffe chap was allowed the same courtesy – good thing that they did keep them.
Interesting complex of access tracks and what appear to be bomb stores to the east of your pinpoint.
Wonder if it could have been a remote bomb stores for RAF Poddington?
Although it would be ‘nice’ to see a 111 at UH, there’s already three of the type displayed in the UK.
Two or three Bellman (tall & short) type hangars will be going from Saints over the next year. They will be a serious challenge to move though.
Beat me to it!
But also A.V.Roe Triplane, first prototype Hawker P.1127, Schneider Trophy winning Supermarine S6B, and SE5a.
Yes and I’m not knocking that aspect at all, just that a few more hours in the library could have resulted in a great piece on the Hurricane, rather than it being under the shadow of the Spit again.
Hi James
I must have missed the one at Cosford
It’s squeezed in behind the Valiant!

Apart from looking around that fabulous Hurricane, the stock footage was awful and was nearly all Spitfire, they really did let themselves down with the research on this one, especailly as pointing out differences between the two types history and uses etc.
apart from Duxford, where are the other two James?
Hi Rich, aswel as 67-0120 at DX, 74-0177 in Cosford Cold War hangar and 68-0011 on a plinth at Lakenheath, to be honest unsure of latest status of that one and would love to know.
Is this not one that’s been reconfigured as a sky-writer?
Also, does one of the museums not have an original (but skeletal) Fokker E.III suspended from the ceiling?
Yes, but not sure if wrongly applied or what its true history is.
Yes, at Lambeth.
Wasn’t the C the same as what the RAF was going to receive with the ‘K’?
Would be nice to see one painted in RAF sqn marks as a ‘what if’ at Cosford.
Coat, door…
