Is that Timbo fiddling around with the nose wheel?!
Thanks for the updates, looks a great set up to be involved with.

Just remembered the refuelling corridor that extends down over Cornwall, no.11 is it?

From the RAF Museums page on its own Black Buck Vulcan ‘598,

“29 Apr 82 The first two Vulcans, XM598 flown by F/L Withers and crew and XM607
departed Waddington on a non – stop flight to Ascension Island supported by
Victor K2’s from Marham.Leaving Waddington at 0900 each Vulcan required
two in – flight refuellings, arriving at Wideawake at 1800 after a flight of 4000
nautical miles. Colour photo at Wideawake – Wingspan International May/June 2001 p.71.”

I reckon you might have seen the intensive pre mission in flight refuelling trials / practice. Don’t forget that Vulcans had previously had their AAR probes removed, and there was a mad scramble to find, and refit them prior to the missions, not to mention getting the systems to work again and train the crews.

Excellent, it’s really good to see under the skin of these beasts.
I bet those inlet guide vanes have caused some language when caught against re-emerging legs and other soft dangly bits!

Often thought about the lack of preserved RAF Venoms, why did they all disappear so quickly ?

    Ditto!
I can never understand how they all virtually disapeared, with only one single seater that Bruce mentions (is it complete?), the lovely two seat NF.3 at Newark and one or maybe two cockpit sections about.
The odd thing is how well its FAA cousin, the Sea Venom, has faired in preservation.

    Any news on the Shacks?

Can’t any of you guys set up something in S.Wales, it is a baron, jetless landscape here now!

Yes that refuelling lane was handy, I must be slightly younger than you as I don’t remember that (wish I had seen F-105s!), but I do remember seeing the A-10s leaving Europe.

Very good, I hope their catalogue gets larger.
Some rare pics on there aswel, such as the XB-36 with its tracked undercarriage on the site header, and this one of a trio 64 sqn Javs.

Dominies are now a common visiter to Cardiff airport, a quick navex followed by a local curry apparently!

Ah sorry, I thought vortex generators were only found externally, such as on wings and aft of Argosy flight decks!

check out the pictures earlier ion this thread from the scrap yard, these were taken in 1997.

I’ve just done that, and it has reminded me just how much hard work, and how far you’ve come with this aircraft. Recommend others to read through the thread again if they haven’t already done so!

BTW was it just the Saudi Lightnings that came back to the UK, or did the Kuwait ones get returned aswel?

Reading between the lines I’m guessing that they carried the first bomb loads with them from the UK, while a supply of bombs was on the way via ship.

Your last sentance has got me thinking Milt, why didn’t Thunder city go for ex Saudi / Kuwait Lightnings?
They seem more capable for hot and high, and I’ve heard (possibly wrongly)that they were in better nick?

That’s good news Tony, nice to know commercial companies are still willing to help projects like this.
