Hence my comment that Dando was correct in taking them for checking, it’s just a shame that he seems to have been given indifferent advice.

    Hi Dando

Welcome to the Forum. You have raised some interesting points, but I note that you have not stipulated which instruments were investigated and quantities. It is true that some instruments are not radioactive in themselves however some are very radioactive, for example we had a distant reading compass repeater which had a reading of 750 kBq (I believe that this is the preferred unit of measurement for the HSE and Environment Agency) and which is deemed to be pretty high in H&S terms. The issue is not only with individual instruments but if they are mounted in a panel with other such instruments the effect is greater and therefore safe distances are greater.

You may have been lucky with the instruments that you hold but unfortunately if an organisation is open to the public or transports items by road there is a raft of regulations that you have to comply with. It may seem ludicrous and in some ways it is, but there must be a duty of care to volunteers and visitors alike and I applaud you for taking them for testing. The visitor who kicked this off obviously was over alarmist but it is always wise to get things checked out.:)

I’ve seen both metal and bakelite versions in Stirling photos.

    Hi chaps

Probably best to put this one to bed…for now:rolleyes:

We’ve been chasing our tail with this ac for years and it’s true questions were asked on our behalf by the CAS and our Moscow Air Attache. Both avenues were met with a resounding “Niet!”

That’s not to say that the rumours aren’t true but we’re not holding our breath for a resolution in the short/medium term…..Sorry. Eyes and ears always open though.

Stirling, Lancaster, Halifax, Sunderland etc etc, certainly the larger RAF aircraft, not sure about smaller types. Used to illuminate panels etc. The Stirling has them adjacent to the main instrument panel, navigators panel, Bomb Aimers station, Flight engineers and next to oxygen regulators scattered about the aircraft.

    Doh!

    I think i got my wires crossed:o

On second thoughts probably not Stirling……sorry

I think the Stirling used the Pioneer Gyro Fluxgate system not the Admiralty type III which used the 6B/1863

Although expensive if it’s the only one or a number of very “few” in existance it can and no doubt will command a good price on the market.
An original “Real McCoy” panel always beats any replica in my books. Generally speaking the panels are normally rarer than the instruments, …..nice project for a dedicated WWII bomber or Sterling enthusiast.

Hope the panel goes to a good home.

A good home would be the Stirling Project or with Hindenburg, but not at that price:eek:

Nice to have an original but as it would blow our budget for the next 3-4 years only useful as a template….

At the end of the day it’s a flat sheet of metal with some holes in and looks moth-eaten at that:diablo:

Interesting photo, highly unlikely to be rooted in sabotage though. We still get instances today of incorrectly manufactured items despite the advent of ‘good’ Quality Control Systems. Anyone familiar with the RAF F760 defect investigation will be all to aware of some of the defects that slip the net and still get fitted to aircraft.

Not Tucano’s Baz, strictly Hercs and Tristars:D

Wrt unskilled workforce, I think it fair to say that even skilled workers were under a lot of pressure in those days. In my own experience a company not a million mile sway from where I’m sitting used to ‘fine’ workers if they made mistakes during production. Human nature being what it is, if you think you could get away with covering something up I’m sure a lot of people would do so, especially if you didn’t realise the true ramifications of the deed through lack of experience.

Having been in the modern equivalent of AID, I would think that the majority of cases of so called ‘sabotage’ could have been explained by the simple fact of people trying to cover up mistakes. That’s not to say though that acts of deliberate sabotage didn’t take place.

    Hi Alan

Depending on which photo you look at, the TPI was fitted in the top left hand corner of the main instrument panel. Not every aircraft had one (even Mk Is and IIIs) so it’s a nice to have….

    cheers
