F-101 Voodoo History and anecdotes
As a flt line mech in ADC in the early 60’s, we were trained on cross servicing of all ADC types. We often serviced “Deuces and “Voodoos all though we were a “Dart unit. This included our Brothers to the North,CAF. I dont recall any real oddities with the “One-Oh-Wonder” besides refueling sequence and the rotary weapons door which allmost ate a MX guy one day. Stayed well away from the intakes at all times. Loved the Dzus fastners, we had Camloks.:dev2:
I believe the CF-101B’s pictured from Comox belonged to the 409th Nighthawks. Used to visit us at McChord back in the 60’s.:diablo:
1946 Airshow
Great pics, I found the International Fuel truck and the 46 Ford police car as interesting as the aircraft. That particular Police ept. must have had some “extra funds” when they procured the “Super Deluxe” model of the Ford. Also noted the speed brakes/ dive flaps on the F-80 flying with the Mustang were opened / extended. Good stuff!!
Flew in / out of there in ’80 / 81,SCARY. seem to remember a group of “Hulks” (Cathay Pacific) resting about the perimeter.:dev2:
One example on display in Virginia at the Army transportartion museum.
I surely thought the subject of “Poorly maintained aircraft” in the Red Eagles was an issue that had been settled. Obviously, I’m incorrect. I guess the years I spent helping to put the unit together from Day One and maintaining the acft was all a dream. Sure did seem real tho.
Canadair Sabre T-shirt
I want one,let me know when they are available. Never worked the MK-1,but spent 11 years on the MK-6 and loved it.
Who built the best MiG-21?
All the MiG-21’s were great aircraft, but the ones “BUILT” by the 4477th Red Eagles were PROBABLY the best of the lot.
I can not believe how far off topic this thread has gotten, nothing REMOTELY related to the original subject.
Aussies in VietNam,Canberra sqdn.
I find this interesting from a personal point of view. I was with the 612th TFS “Misty” flight as a crew chief(F-100F’s) at PhuCat AB and we were transferred as a unit to PhanRang. When we tried to get our **** together at PhanRang, all we met was opposition, no one wanted us there,we did everything wrong, etc etc, youve heard the story before i’m sure. Bottom line, I needed a forklift to offload a bunch of stuff,MY OWN AIRFORCE couldnt/wouldnt help. I approached #2 Sqdn, and they let me borrow a forklift, without their help, we would not have completed our tasks on time. They would accept NOTHING in return, (thank god as we had little to offer. ) A fantastic group of folks, we were invited to their club and made complete fools of ourselves throwing darts.(Damn those folks could drink) Went to work one morning and a small yellow kangaroo was stenciled neatly on the vertical fin of all our “Huns”, underneath in small letters it said”Fine Lads”. Many thanks from an old dude, I never forget. There is a fraternal / unofficial organization”Brothers in Arms”, believe me.
Flexible drives,Aero,Auto or Marine?
Sorry ’bout that, but they look like the flap drive cables used on the electric trailing edge flaps on the T-33 and F-105. I apologize for not being more specific.

I know nothing of the WW2 Bomber groups / sqdns, but I DO recognize at least 4 Sqdn insignia that went on to be FIS /FWS units in later years. Neat stuff, thanks.
Is the FJ Fury the one that formerley belonged to FSI @ Mojave CA?
