Try a ‘red dot sight’ as used in air-rifle/pistol shooting – they are relatively cheap, from about £20 or so. You will need an adaptor to fit a RDS onto your hot-shoe, there’s a firm called Photosolve who make a gadget called Extend-a-Sight which is available off the i/net for about $30.
Another way to get round the problem may be to buy a loupe which fits round the rear screen, these are available from specialist photo retailers.

A friend witnessed the event- not looking good- possibility of people outside the field caught up in it- I hope that’s not the case.
Not totally sure, but I think that Sony cameras use an updated Minolta fitting, so may be compatible but lose some functionality. Brian – ‘Pen Pusher’ – is a Sony user and can probably give you the correct info.
