not totally convinced that’s a Ford V8 Pilot,,,,but I’m willing to listen to more knowledgable people, though..
It probably doesn’t move your search forward any, but construction number 27-134 was not among the 20 Aztecs purchased in the early 60’s, so at a guess it may well have remained a company demonstrator and was never painted in USN colours?

As a slight thread diversion, what are your numbers ? when I was born I was the 2,436,424,322nd person alive at that time, and the 75,320,567,896th. that had ever lived – all figures approximate, of course.

One was also entered in the first Kings Cup air race in 1922 – whether it actually did compete or not I don’t know, but what an impressive sight that would have made.
Sounds very interesting – is this a quota-restricted attendees event (as some night photoshoots tend to be) or is it ‘open’ i.e. just turn up and pay ?
Around 15.30-ish this afternoon – large low-wing single engined monoplane with fixed undercarriage over W.G.C. at about 2000 feet, not moving very fast; had me stumped for a while, reckon it may have been a Prentice. Can anybody else confirm, or suggest alternatives. A late spot, couldn’t get a good view thru’ my bins as it was flying away from me.
That really must have been an impressive sound with XH558 thundering and echoing around the valleys.
