Just look at the weather forecast, try to choose a calm day with gentle breezes, and go for it. You’ll probably bump in several forumites toting cameras and lenses. As I live just 30 minutes away down the A1 and can get in for nowt, I’ll probably try it for a couple of days (assuming petrol hasn’t reached £10 per litre by then).
Only went once, in ’76. Sat in a queue in the town for 3 hours, ended up with a gut full of wind from gassy Yank beer (the future Mrs.Regal was not amused), couldn’t afford burgers at the prices they were charging, got the impression it was badly organised compared to other shows I’d been to, never went again.
Scanned a few surviving pics.
On 5 June 1983, in front of nearly half a million people, NASA’s Space Shuttle Enterprise arrived at Stansted on the back of a specially modified Boeing 747 as part of NASA’s one-off European tour that included stopovers in Germany, Italy and France. Stayed for the weekend!
Yes, the local farmers made a quick buck that week turning their fields into car parks.
Just over the bridge, Sausalito. And a bit further up, Muir Woods.

Blimey, Ewan, you’re a star. That’s what my original notation says, it is Biggin, and I believe the year is ’74. Last time I googled on this aircraft, couldn’t find out much about it. Any pointers ?
No theory, Bri, but a similiar thing happened to me many years ago when I lived near St. Albans. I turned on my music centre (remember them ?) in my bedroom one afternoon and picked up a transmission from a HP Victor that was flying overhead in the circuit for Radlett. Try as I could, I could never duplicate the effect.

I reckon the Webmaster/Mods should open a new sticky in GD titled ‘Classic Threads’, and this thread should be the first such entry. Preserve such hilarity for future generations, they may well need it.

:)That’s more like it, thanks everybody.

..er, I didn’t particularly want to know what happened to her, I just expected Forumites to reply with coruscating wit and their usual high degree of ‘mean spirited’ ( to quote Robert Downey Jr. ) humour. Guess I chose the wrong subject.
Now, whatever happened to Muffin the Mule ? – and yes, I am old enough to remember the original showing.

Knew I had a few pics of this gent flying the Troopship, so I dug them out and scanned the prints. Technically they’re not very good, but I hope give a flavour of the guys flying style. In the take-off shot it appears that Boy’s idea of rotation was to retract the undercarriage; the other shot is unusual in that both engines are turning and he’s flying straight and level.
Couldn’t get away with a display like that these days.
