Just before you part with your hard earned cash…..
The BD jacket is 1949 Pattern, introduced then and in service up until the 1970’s. The small pattern RAF pilot’s wings are quite scarce and often/usually repro. I’d be very careful before shelling out what will be over £200.
Thanks one and all!
It never ceases to amaze me just how much knowledge is out there.
Not all the bits were acquired over the weekend – sorry if that was misleading. The instruments came all together a while ago but only now has my interest been rekindled in them so i thought i ought to know exactly what they were. I’m trying to get a Spitfire V panel together with a very long term idea of a cockpit section home-build. The glider instrument appealed to my magpie nature and was only £5 so I figured what the heck! Wish I’d bought the other one too!
Not wishing to harp on too much, the prop came from Scotland although I’ve heard of several fences like those mentioned in various other locations. There was a fairly well noted one near Speke too.
Should there be any markings visible on the blade, if so, where? Also, anyone got any suggestions on how to remove just the top layer of green paint and what to treat the wood with as it has seen better days and was obviously a hit with a particularly malevolent gang of woodworms!
Thanks Mark 12!
I was pretty confident it was Spitfire but couldn’t find any 300 prefix part nos. to confirm it.
Any more ideas on the prop and the Mk1B AI? I’d like to know what types the AI was appropriate for, or if it was generic across all a/c.
If you’d been at Glasgow airport at the weekend, you’d have seen the odd looks I got from my passengers carrying the prop under my arm! As the Dash-8 is a turbo-prop, I’m sure some of them were a bit disturbed that the Captain has to carry spare blades “just in case”!

Canopy appears to be Spitfire, but its an unusual shape – Early Mk1 I think – odd that the metalwork is entirely missing.S6 or more usually 6S shows that the part was made at Southampton
Bruce
Bruce, the markings could easily be 6S as the run around the circle thus “6 S 6 S”. At first I thought it was “G” but it does look more like a “6”.
I reckon this is from a Horsa? 1944 dated and appears to be unused.
I think I’ve seen these on the right hand side of Spitfire cockpits, but unsure what marks had it.
A couple of other items for your consideration…..
Marked as a MK1B
Bruce, SUPERB! Knew I could count on my fellow enthusiasts /greatcoats. The canopy came from my grandfather’s allotment where he was growing parsley under it. He had 2 others which disappeared one snowy winter, presumably as sledges! The damage to the lip was done by my father with his air rifle – philistine!
PS A “Greatcoat” is a vintage version of an “Anorak”!:D
Shot 3, side-on. All options considered but it will take alot to persuade me it’s not Spitfire. Any ideas on what the “SG” or S6″ may mean?
Shot 2. First shot is looking at it head-on, although it appears it could be from either end.
Next up is this canopy. Obvious thoughts are early Spitfire (flat sides, no window/panel). The back seems to be cut off hence no lip for metalwork. The only markings is a small circle with “SG”(?) inside it twice – nothing else whatsoever.
Possibly a Rotol blade? The green paint is from where it was used as a fence post! The original paint can be seen underneath. It has a brass leading edge and a laminated wood construction.

Think the RAF Harvard used a 10.5x 4 tyre – we have the hubs to fit them – the hubs are really common and the tyres are rare (and expensive). Most Six drivers have changed their wheel to a P-51 12.5 channel tread tyre since the T-6G has a steerable tailwheel and thats the size of wheel it uses.
Hope that helps….
Sounds sensible and plausible – thanks.
The tyre is available, although I’d rather Spitfire spares & parts as swaps. Open to offers of the hard stuff though…..!
Bruce – I’ll buy the drinks by the ml!:D
Just found this picture on the following thread. pretty much rules out Hurricane once and for all.
Okay, we seem to be making progress even if it’s by elimination!
Working on, does Typhoon or Tempest seem possible? Did US aircraft have armored (sp!) screens?
My first thought for the pointy square one (No.2) was Beaufighter, then Hurricane but obviously not.
I ruled out German aircraft but is that even a possibility? (Clutching at straws now!)
Finally, No.1 looks odd in that one side of the bottom is a rounded corner but the other is squared which seems quite distinctive.
As they say on that reality based US show; “The truth is out there”, although the same show says “Trust noone”!
If we ever meet up chaps, there’s a drink in this for all the contributors on this and my other “Help” threads – your help is appreciated! As you may gather, aircraft parts is a new avenue for me (despite being a commercial pilot!). Now, ask me about flying gear/clothing etc…..or US WW2 army gear……then I’m your man!
