Okay then, how about……….
Take Airways – should be India or China based, obviously!
Air Chance
Sleazy Jet
Air 2 Throne
Air Fix
Air Indoors
Air Apparent
Air Dressers
Air Today Gone Tomorrow
Have I gone too silly yet?;) :p 😀
Trim (Centre of Gravity balancing) is quite critical on the Emb-145. Sometimes one pax too far forward can make the difference. Incidentally, it doesn’t matter which side you sit on!
Sometimes I used to fly with extra fuel just to act as ballast so the airplane would trim within CoG limits.
Moondance – just flew to ABZ and bck today – what a nightmare! The snow has been causing havoc, plus the glideslope failed when the airport re-opened. Most diverted to EDI but we were fortunate and got in on the Localizer/DME as the vis improved just at the right time. Hope you don’t have to travel back this weekend! I’m on the early ABZ again tomorrow morning too! Hope the snow lays off!
Mark,
would I be cheating if I guessed based on your PM content?!!;)

Err….? Lost me there.
These aren’t crashed aircraft, just scrapped disused ones. Or were you being ironic? If so, I apologise.
Besides, how exactly do you hunt WITH little furry animals? Surely they’re not vicious enough? Never seen a pack of savage rabbits (except that one from Holy Grail). Can they be trained?;)

Have to heartily endorse the negative comments about the ATP I’m afraid! They’ve been like that since new too which is the sad thing. The ATP is a prime example of a committee decision without consultation with anyone who flies the things! The ergonomics were a bit of a nightmare IMHO.
It’s a shame as the ATP had all the potential of being a very good a/c, but before the enhanced version (Jetstream 61) came about, the cash plug was pulled.
If I get a chance I’ll put some comparison photos of the 2 flight decks on for you.

Just a couple of minor points…..
Turbo-props never use reverse thrust, they use reverse PITCH – the reverse selector changes the blade angle. Thrust should only ever be mentioned in conjuction with jet engined aircraft (as was drummed in to me on my last conversion course!)
As an aside, Southampton and the Isle of Man are probably the last two airfields that permit power-backs.
The ATP does not look like a Viscount inside, more like a 748, it’s direct cousin. The Dash-8 is a very similar flight deck layout in some areas and more archaic looking than the ATP in others. Having flown both, I can safely proclaim the Dash-8 the nicer aircraft to fly by quite a margin! Much more a pilot’s aircraft.
Certainly sounds a possibility but I would think it would be obvious to most that a Firefly is not a Spitfire/Seafire. Until I see it with my own eyes etc….I think visual proof will be the only answer. As soon as I have any more info, I’ll post it here.
Rest assured, not a wind-up although further research needs to be done by me!
My colleague who is a joint owner (50/50) of the said fuselage stated it was a Mk1 Seafire. I questioned this for all the reasons outlined above and he insisted it was a Seafire 1 (it still has it’s hook too so it’s certainly ex-carrier!)
As he has spent a number of years working on the warbird scene restoring/maintaining and flying, he should know his stuff. That said, he wouldn’t be the first to be mistaken when presented with a potential Holy Grail!
I shall endeavour to find out more and see if I can get some snaps for you all. I’m keeping an open mind….
As an aside, the aim of the project is to restore to flying condition. A suitable source for wings is being sought after. A zero-timed Merlin – crated with logs and docs, was purchased by said mate for £500! It came crated in a teak crate and jungle wrapped. Thinking it was just an empty crate he asked if he could buy it and was told yes, but only if he took that flaming motor away with it! Some people…..!
Any ideas how a Seafire/Firefly would end up in Ethiopia anyway?
Completely self-indulgent but……me driving an Embraer-145 over the Alps @ 37,000 on the way back from Venice (told you it was self-indulgent!)
Just got this response from Channel 4 – thought it would be of interest and answers an earlier question:
“Glad to hear you enjoyed the programme.
Firstly the music played at the end of the programme was Humming Chorus from MADAME BUTTERFLY – Puccini.
As for a video/dvd release, I believe we may in negotiation to do this, but no confirmed detail as yet, sorry.”

Methinks a slight fib may be in the offing! Although if you’re ever up near Manchester I’ll certainly by you a drink.:D
Merlin 3945
Extract from my logbook 15/10/99 (see my comments on the “Could U do it” thread).
Truly the highlight of my flying career! In those days we could still take Jumpseat passengers so guess where AVM Johnson sat?!! The skipper even let me be handling pilot for that sector too. Not often one can say “I flew Johnnie Johnson”.
His parting words were “Make sure you send me a copy of the picture Johnson, you old bugger!” (We shared the same surname), which I duly did.
I’m the F/O on the back right (glasses).
I have never seen a programme that evoked such emotion from a grown man such as I before. Truly humbling. I just felt i wanted to contact each of the chaps and buy them all the biggest round of drinks i could afford.
They truly put “Great” in Great Britain. It has been a privilege over the years to have know a number of “The Few” (even receiving a wedding present from one of them!), and I have never yet ceased to be in awe when in the presence of such REAL heroes, not David Beckham et al.
I was also touched by the German pilot ……Wedding who summed it all up rather succinctly by saying how well the BoB was won by the RAF and what a waste the whole exercise was from the German point of view – a very realistic and insightful appraisal.
I too can only hope the DVD will be out imminently.
As for “young” warbirds pilots, let’s just say I’m working on it – watch this space!
Flew with Johnnie Johnson about a year before he died and asked him what he thought of flying:
“I still get the same thrill now (60+ years on) as when I first climbed into a cockpit”
I then asked about aerial fighting.
“I was sh!t scared and anyone else who says they weren’t is a liar or mad”
Fair comment! I guess it was a case of duty overpowering fear. Last week’s episode had a quote from Bob Doe (I think) along the lines of “One of the chaps always threw up whilst running to his aircraft on a scramble but still got in and flew to the fight”
Hard Core!
Maybe if the circumstances were the same…..but thankfully I probably won’t ever know.
I have the great position of being paid to fly but without the inherent hazzards of someone being beastly and shooting at me (although if Al Qaeda get their way….!). An inherently better way of life.
Seperate altogether – STEVE
I trust you’re suitably disgusted by the recent desecration of the song which contains your tagline?!:p
Sure is! As I recall as the Vulcan climbed out, a hard roll and turn to right was executed.
It stands out particularly well in my mind as it was incredible seeing a Vulcan controlled in such a manner – truly awesome!
