The silver and red example, F-AZLY, is actually a Yak-3UA rather than a -9UM.
As I understand it, the British compounds at Heydekrug only held NCO’s. The senior NCO was James ‘Dixie’ Deans who was awarded the MBE after the war for his leadership both in the camp and during ‘The Long Marches’ of 1945.
Let’s be clear that its not the aircraft that is duff, though late, so another type is not needed to replace it. It’s that we can’t afford to operate many aircraft so we can do without any maritime patrol aircraft…… until the need arises!
Yes indeed. My point was that this is even worse than the AEW saga in that it’s being cancelled even though the end result is a perfectly good aircraft, unlike the AEW which was still catching fire and so forth at the time of cancellation!
Even the Sentinel is going, and they’ve only been in service five minutes…
Bring back the Shackleton 😀
Great minds think alike!! 😀
Well there are a couple of near-airworthy Shackletons they could commandeer! They were only used 20 years past thier planned retirement date, might aswell bring them back to do another 20…
Good God!! All that fuss and money dragged out over years for no end result, and it’ll leave the RAF without a decent maritime patrol aircraft- and we all thought the Nimrod AEW saga was bad enough!!!
I understand that spending needs to be cut, but this is outrageous…
Yes please to the pictures Tony, if it’s not too much hassle.
Can it be a wreck that has already been recovered or does it have to still be in-situ?
Glad to have finally seen the whole programme last night, having only caught half of it when previously shown. I would agree with some of the comments about the lack of depth in certain areas, but there was certainly plenty worthwhile to see, such as the interview with Gibson’s ‘popsie’ and the footage of Gibson himself- I’d never heard his voice before.
Perhaps my mind is playing tricks, but I’m sure I saw some extra scenes in the iplayer version a few weeks back- was last night’s show a slightly edited version??
Congratulations on your new purchase Mistyar, I’m glad to hear family and locals have accepted it so warmly! Just a few thoughts on colour scheme ideas…
The brown/yellow/red scheme as seen on some early production aircraft (and my personal favourite):
and
The rather lovely red/black/white scheme used on the CAA’s own G-AVDX:
Or for a colourful foreign military option, how about a Brazilian Air force example?? Wrong nose profile, but still…
Does anyone know what became of the flight deck and tail unit of the Freighter, I seem to remeber they were still around on the site about ten years ago.
TonyH,
Many thanks for posting the above, isn’t it amazing how touching these gestures are so many years after the event? The way the Dutch still remember allied airmen, and the efforts they put into such ceremonies as the one described above brings a lump to the throat. An amazing bunch of people- 250,000 Gilders by voluntary donation for the recovery of five men lost 70 years ago…
It makes me want to get a paddle out and row the UK closer to the Dutch coast!!
Well I made a boo-boo in my first post, clever eh? The guages were canted toward the 10 o’clock position, and not the 2 o’clock, so easy scanning sounds the likely reason. Thanks to all for the info. 🙂
Looks like Lancaster to me, any numbers or stamps on it anywhere?
I saw about half of this programme on iplayer a few weeks back, so it seems it has been shown already on another Beeb channel. Looked a decent programme, but by the time I came back to finish it, it had been removed from iplayer- doh!
