Everyone grumbles at catering at Duxford, Hendon, Cosford… what happened to eating a pack up under a tree? 🙂 We had an authentic 40s picnic last time I was there.
Whenever I’ve visited Hendon I’ve always taken a packed lunch, although not an authentic 40s picnic under a tree!
….There was the Nakajima Hayate… an extremely handsome radial engined Japanese fighter ‘plane which was developed late in WW2 and known to the US forces as the “Frank”….apparently a very potent fighter that could take on the P-51’s and P-47’s and be a machine to be reckoned with….
…from all accounts during the last weeks of the war when one of these entered the Radar screens and showing a great turn of speed, the U.S.A.A.F. fighter pilots engaging in “radar watching” would matter-of-factly state…”Forget it …It’s a Frank” !!
I see what you mean! https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Nakajima+Hayate&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjs8M7Ola7KAhWBNBQKHQ0jCWMQiR4IgAE&biw=1920&bih=1067
Is the Victor’s paint due to be redone any time?
As a fully paid-up and certified member of the Roundel Police, did they just paint an RAF Roundel over the star part of the stars and bars, leaving the bars visible – like they did in the British Pacific Fleet – or has the paint weathered back to reveal the bars. If that’s the case then it’s odd that so much of the roundel remains.
I’ve had a quick look with Google for any other pictures of MkIIIs with the mixed roundel but without luck, does anybody on here know where I might find pictures?
Victor – and yes, definitely!
Grr, sorry, of course Victor! Would you believe that is my favourite of the three V’s? :stupid:
Give that Valiant a lot of tlc!
This is looking good, thanks guys!
Very slight thread drift, how manoeuvrable was the Mosquito in comparison with the Bf109 but more importantly the Bf110?
I was delivering to the AAC Museum at Middle Wallop today and I saw a Lynx Mk9, an Apache, the Bell 212, what I’m sure was a Dauphin departed and as I was leaving I spotted 2 naval Lynx either in for major service (as panels missing) or scrapping parked on the apron outside Hangar 1. I also had a quick peek in to the museum from the cafe (very naughty) and saw Chipmunk WG432 on display.
I did see any film present at all, and all the lights were on. There seemed to be something going on marking the anniversary of the first flight of the hurricane, there were some people walking around with bits of paper and climbing over the hurricane in the BoB hall with a museum guide. A pleasing day still.
Is there any reason why S Sugar is in a tail high attitude, I couldn’t obviously see a reason…
FB
Oh, there was one more thing, the B17 tail was wrapped in plastic as it seems the roof leaks
I hope the roof is fixed by next weekend when I visit 🙁
RAF museum Hendon have events focussed on this anniversary; this weekend 7th/8th.
I’m visiting next weekend, hopefully the display will still be there.
What’s new?
I last visited Hendon in January this year and am visiting again in a few weeks, what new exhibits and displays are there around the site?
Of course none, but there is a theoretical possibility of planting a bomb on the plane.
But, again, there were reports hinting that the plane was in poor technical condition (plus, it did suffer some damage around its tail before) and the operating company has liquidity issues and a history of technical problems on its rather old planes (like, catching fire, but they were Tupolev’s FWIW) so it shouldn’t be conveniently presumed that it was foul play before the investigation is over.
Haven’t the Americans said there was a ‘high altitude heat source’ at the time the plane disappeared off the radar?
VICTOR to the skies
Tina or Lindy, I’m not fussed….. The Victors were the true hero’s…. Could fly faster, further, carry more bombs than a Vulcan. It took a dozen Victors to get one Vulcan to the Falklands, but the Vulcan got all the credit. They look as good – Straight out of a Sci fi movie yet they are now consigned to the backwaters of Aviation History while the Vulcan basks in the cold war glory.
I know it will never happen but we can but dream.
I would love to see this on the display circuit, I have always thought the Victor was the better looking V bomber!
“C’est à quelle distance!” And the white flag would be flown in Paris.
