The normal color used is yellow but the pics show also a dark (black?) variation.
The “black” variation is almost certainly down to the use of an orthochromatic photographic emulsion – they lighten blues, darken reds, and record yellow as black. Quite commonly used as they could be processed under a red safelight, meaning you could see it develop and stop at the appropriate moment. The Hawker Tornado photo shows this effect perfectly on the roundel and fin flash.

Well, I can tell you what Dad was doing seventy years ago today. He spent the evening stood on the steps of the village pub because, at 14, he was too young to go in!
Adrian
The book is My restless Years – I assume you’ve already encountered this?
Adrian
Sorry, Richard, for some reason I don’t get notifications of PMs, so unless I spot the tiny banner when I log in I don’t notice them!
Apart from a reminiscence about his garden and trousers(!) from my Mum’s cousin, all I’ve found out is from one of Bolitho’s books – which one escapes me at the mo. I suspect you’ve already found it, but I’ll let you know the title when I find which pile it’s in!
Best wishes,
Adrian
If you have a local ATC they’ll probably have your arm off…
Adrian
No – Just the public road that runs along the back of the airfield. Both the Blackbird and B.24 now in AirSpace for the next few months
If that’s from Grange Road, however long was the lens?!
Adrian
I’d guess that Duxman is on the far side of the airfield with a VERY long lens, hence an unusual angle, and very compressed perspective. Unless the B24 has been teleported to another airfield entirely…
I’m sure it’ll go back into the AAM much as it is, but wouldn’t it be nice to see the Avenger painted up as a Tarpon from Hatston? Or at least as a UK-operated machine if my terminology is off!
Adrian
At risk of sounding like the roundel police, is that really a period typeface for the Hurricane’s serial? I don’t recall seeing another one like it.
Adrian
…which reminds me I saw an SE5 replica near Oxford on Sunday (something to do with Bicester, perhaps?), and also a butterfly tail Beechcraft.
Adrian
Intriguing – consider me educated!
Adrian
That was my thought as well, but if it’s 6.5cm across it’s for a whopping great length of film or a huge format.
Adrian
I do like the “runway” underneath it – a nice touch!
Adrian
I was sure I’d replied to this earlier…. very odd! Anyway, I’m sure I saw an obituary in the last year for someone who’d managed their century – maybe Sqn Ldr Scramble would know, he’s usually first off the mark with obituary posts?
Adrian
Very nice! Poor Aggie Paggie.
If I may pick a minor nit, I suspect that MH434 is 1982 rather than 1972, as the Reds have Hawks. And I love the flying shed at the end!
Adrian
I wasn’t… but does anyone else look at the design and think it looks like the spawn of a sailplane and the English Electric Wren?
Given the vast improvements in solar cells since then, quite an achievement in its day!
