Thanks Bruce, so the fabric was applied in thin strips layed next to each other, I was asuming sheets of cloth.
Were there official directives on how to apply, ie direction, thickness, areas (I’ve heard not to be applied around intakes) etc?
I take it the application process had to be done very carefully to produce the very smooth finish for paint?

You were right the first time – the fabric was applied in sheets. The tapes Bruce mentioned were used to cover the joints between sheets, around edges of hatches and panels etc., and where reinforcement was required.

Saw them on BBC Breakfast this morning. Absolutely glorious machines in every respect. Wonderful.

My question is what is the squadron and how many aircraft are lined up?

These are F.2s from 257 Squadron.

Typical Hunter Squadron strength at this time was about 16 aircraft. This is why when 111-Sqn did the 22 aircraft loop they had to borrow some aircraft and pilots. 257-Sqn chequers were green and yellow with a ‘beastie’ in the centre. Happy days.

    Goldilocks

The ‘beastie’ being a Chinthe owing to the squadron’s Burma connection.

Not sure whether these would actually be considered as ‘art’ but I thought I’d post it anyway.

Attached are a couple of profiles I recently completed (out of the full set of 40 or so) for a forthcoming book on the Hornet. Although authored by Tony Buttler, the book has had major input from fellow forumite and Hornet wrangler dcollins103 too. 🙂

(Cheeky plug – the book is due to be published in early March I believe :p)

Nice work Mark, I didn’t realise you were talented in the art department aswel!

Thanks James. I sing and dance too you know.

    (actually, that last bit’s a lie :D)

Anyway, here’s a Mossie too, and one which Bruce will certainly recognise!

Actually I don’t think I ever came to any definite conclusion. The trouble is it varies enormously, for a restoration project, depending on how much equipment, wiring etc. is fitted. For my own project I decided on about half a ton I think. That was based on a fully kitted cockpit and seat with stripped out gun pack fitted and nothing in the radio bay or nose. That’s pretty rough and ready though!

Does anyone know the fate of Arnim Faber, the Luftwaffe pilot who mistakenly landed his Fw190 in England giving the RAF their first look at the type.

Keith, I’m not sure your geography is any better than Armin Faber’s. I think you’ll find that he landed in Wales not England, at least that’s where Pembrey was last time I was there.

Can’t say for sure but I think they are aerials for the Rebecca homing system

    Correct. DME aerials.

Indeed, but I visited Lambeth on the weekend for the first time since the refurbishment and was very disappointed with what they’ve done to it, so couldn’t resist having a dig of my own! 🙂

Ironic that they’ve just spent £40 million cocking-up Lambeth and are now talking about having to close one of it’s most valuable services and booting out a quarter of its staff to “cut costs”. Beggars belief.

Not as sad as the fate that’s befallen XE601 I’d suggest. 😡

I took this picture outside Hunter Flying’s hangar at Exeter a few days after 801 arrived. I recall John Sparks telling me about the amount of sand that came out of it!
