    Albert,

out of those choices an F.5 might, perhaps, be the most attractive due to the local connection of the A.S.Sapphire – but were the tailpipes of Sapphire and Avon engined Hunters the same?

    Roger Smith.

The tailpipe shapes are the same, but the position of the various vents, small intakes etc. around the rear fuselage aren’t.

The F.4 is the closest match to an F.51, but why not give the aeroplane it’s original identity and colour scheme back?

Firstly, I’d like to say that I prefer whole airframes, but a recent visit to Aeroventure just opened my eyes –

A disabled person would find it very difficult to get into an aircraft of any sort, let alone sit in the cockpit (I’m thinking wheelchairs here…). Imagine if you will, a cockpit at ground level (a small ramp to the cockpit floor), and only one seat fitted. The cockpit has lights, and sounds, and allows said disabled person to see / re-live the sights and sounds of a cockpit. That to me is priceless, and a brilliant way of introducing aircraft preservation to those who cannot climb vertical fuselage sides…

Children benefit too – As a kid, there is only one important part of an aircraft – cockpit!

I don’t agree with culling good airframes to keep the cockpit, but if the airframe is done for, the cockpit is worthy of saving…

    Cockpitters – I salute you….

    Lindy’s Lad,

    We cockpitters salute you!

These are EXACTLY the sentiments we have been trying to get across to the less ‘enlightened’ and open-minded members of this forum for a long time.

    Well said sir.

David, I’ve scanned the engine removal section and the list of ancilliary equipment from the AP into a PDF file. If you PM me an e-mail address (I’ve got a couple for you so not sure which is the best) I’ll send it to you. It’s about 1.5Mb in total.

Not sure if it’ll have everything you need in it but it’s a good start.

I believe A968 still exists and is preserved at an Indian Air Force base in West Bengal.

If you look on the old Airsam site, the 6A/760 on there has a broad arrow mark instead of a Kings crown, when did that change ?

    http://www.airsam.clara.net/Spitfire-1.htm

Just to add to the confusion I have a very late 6A/760 (dated 1965) which has the sec/ref. no. stamped into it but no crown OR broad arrow.

    Mark,

Are you still working on a Mossie panel?

    Cheers

    Cees

Hi Cees, yes I am. The project has grown slightly into a fuselage ‘slice’ that encompasses the nose/pedal box – instrument panel – throttle box – control column – windscreen area. I’m working on the interior stuff at present but will then construct the actual fuselage shell using the proper ply/balsa/ply sandwich method. I’m waiting for a certain Mr. Collins to perfect the technique on his Hornet before I start.:p

It’s about 70% complete at present and I’m desperately trying to get enough finished to display at Cockpitfest in a few weeks time. I could do with another month really though!

I am hoping someone from this forum can help me identify and possibly find a home for a bombing device in my possession. I had been told it was from a Mossie but I haven’t been able to find anything to support this theory. any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I can certainly give it a good home if it’s looking for one?

I’m no real expert on these things but I know of at least 3 versions of the basic wartime-style BFP.

There’s the 6A/616 which I think is the square topped version, then there’s the 6A/760 which has the rounded top. A lot of 6A/760s were converted from 6A/616s by having their top edges rounded off and the sec/ref no. restamped. You’ll often see the old 6A/616 stamping still visible but struck out.

The curved top was introduced so that the panel would fit into aircraft that didn’t have clearance for the two original upper corners. Have a look at a Mosquito cockpit for a perfect example where the panel is fitted tight up inside the curvature of the fuselage – in fact the upper mounting bracket is attached directly to the inner fuselage.

Talking of Mosquitos, some BFPs fitted to them had a rectangular cut-out section in the bottom edge below the T&S to allow clearance for the undercarriage lever locking catch when ‘up’ was selected. They still have the 6A/760 sec/ref no. though so I’ve always assumed it was a de Havilland mod. rather than an ‘official’ design.

There’s also the brass version you mentioned which is made from much, much lighter gauge metal but has ridges pressed into it between the instruments to stiffen it. Don’t know a lot about those so have no idea if they had separate sec/ref nos.?

…would you have them sell another Spitfire to pay for it.

Yes, without question. In fact two if necessary:D

Which reminds me – I forgot to say that BS381C-241 was later re-numbered to 641. So don’t get confused, 241 and 641 are the same thing.

If they are the correct colours (they look to be, just rather faded) they should be,

    BS381C-241 Dark Green, and

    BS381C-638 Dark Sea Grey
