I’ve ‘Googled’ this photo of N8156, in Ottawa.

I presume its clarifys what a real Camel stick looks like ?

I contacted the seller earlier today, told him it was a chair leg and sent a link to this very photo. I also thanked him for giving me a bloody good laugh.:)

    Behold the reply…

“the item isnt mine although the owner is sure this is genuine, if you want a ‘laugh’ i could give the telephone number of the owner”

I’m tempted by the offer of the phone number, if only to see if the dialling code is for somewhere in Cloud-Cuckoo Land.

You couldn’t make this stuff up!:D

If they are going to resort to military serials on them it might have been nice to have put original service period roundels on them.

Nothing wrong with the roundels – they’re perfectly appropriate to the “original service period”. If one really wanted to be picky then they seem to have been painted too far aft – but who cares? It’s a real treat to see these beauties working for a living again!

Is anyone else as confused as I am?

Les, you seem to be stating that the grip on ebay isn’t from a Canberra B(I)8 (or PR9) yet your photo of a B(I)8 shows what looks to me like an AC14292, which is exactly what the bloke on ebay is selling.

Like several other posters here, I’m looking at a Canberra yoke with an identical grip attached to it, and it’s just like the one in your pic.

For info, mine is also marked 27J/540.

Agreed. It looks exactly like the one in Les’ photo to me.

Doubt it’s a Hunter hand grip either

You’re right to doubt it Les – it most certainly isn’t.

TY Rocketeer, and Smoothrite is? Oh Ive got 2 Bang seats to do aswell, one is doing a paddling pool impression at the moment. Bex

Bex, try Plastidip for the yoke. It’s a hard plastic coating which is almost identical to the original stuff. You need to dip (hence the name!) the item in it to get the best effect though. Dashed good stuff. I’ve used it on my Mosquito yoke and can send you piccie if you want to see what it looks like once applied?

    See here – http://www.plastidip.co.uk/index2.cfm?page=products&prodId=9

    Hi Tony

Glad someone does, nice to hear from a fellow BI(8) stick lover ! it is the Hunter type top isnt it on those ?

Well, it bears some vague resemblance to the Hunter F.1 – F.5 grip but certainly isn’t a Hunter grip grafted on. Yes, it has the same trigger/camera/stores button assembly in it, but then so did almost every other grip of the period. It also has a similar sliding, thumb operated trim switch on the back but that’s where the similarity ends.

Nice looking grip though all the same!

Despite Damien ridiculing it, this is indeed the right hand grip, i.e. the right ‘horn’ of a Canberra yoke.

I’m no expert on Canberras so I’m not sure of the particular mark but apart from that the sellers description seems accurate to me. I think there were a couple of designs of yoke with a trigger mechanism (which is a standard ‘gun trigger/camera gun button/stores release button’ unit fitted to most fighter stick-tops of the period by the way) in the right grip of the yoke. I thought this type was from the B(I).8 but I’m by no means certain!

Where’s LesB when you need him?

Edit: “Despite Damien ridiculing it” – sorry, that sounded a bit stronger than I intended 😮 – “Despite Damien taking the Mick”…how’s that instead???

    Bex,

When the previous owner sold WH984 on it was relatively complete inside. Knowing how keen they are at CNAM I would imagine they are/will be restoring it to a high standard.

The previous owners website is still floating around if you want to have a look – it has some photos of the inside etc.

Still there – it’s that little icon with the page and quill pen in the bottom right corner of each post. Hover you mouse over it and you’ll see a description appear.

Edit: Oh, icon’s there but just tried it but it doesn’t seem to work

Yes, the cockpit sections are ex-Coltishall. I believe they are to placed undercover at the museum in a new shed in due course.

I didn’t say I thought it wasn’t a problem and it is, in fact, inappropriate. However, it’s the only mechanism available on the website. Surely that’s better than nothing?

My point was purely that it’s highly inapropriate, inaccurate and insulting in itself to say that the means by which this petition is being conducted, with all good intentions, is “another insult to those non-Britons who served in Bomber Command”.

…the Parliamentary requirement of British citizenship for the pollsters is another insult to those non-Britons who served in Bomber Command.

Oh, for heavens sake James, no it isn’t. It’s merely a side-effect of the mechanism by which this generic e-petition system works on the number10.gov.uk website.

Again, it’s a generic system clearly intended to be used for petitions raised for the attention of the UK Government for issues affecting the UK. Therefore it makes perfect sense to allow only British citizens or residents (i.e. British voters – the people it affects) to vote. A quick look reveals a petition to make St. Davids Day a National Holiday in Wales (which I have also signed!) – would you have Czechs, Poles etc. polling on that as well?

No doubt if a petition mechanism were to be devised specifically for a Bomber Command medal then it would allow voting from all the countries that participated in the campaign.

For my own view, I think it’s scandalous that no medal has ever been awarded so I’ve signed the petition.

Seems of a waste of life of pilots from both sides just to deliever a leg, I hope he appreciated it, presumably those Bf 109’s weren’t shot down by Blenhiems, couldn’t a more peaceful solution have been engineered, like waiting for a strong northerly wind and hanging it from a barrage ballooon with Red Cross markings perhaps, now that would have been a sight, it could have gone all the way to Russia and won a prize for the sender.

No, safe passage for a single aircraft was offered by the Germans but was refused by Arthur Harris who insisted that it be dropped during a normal bombing raid. It was a Canadian pilot in a Blenheim who did the deed, but I can’t remember any more details I’m afraid.

No problem Spade Grip anytime, but I knew if Id made a boo boo Les would set me right, I knew there was only one bang seat but I wasnt 100% sure about which mk was the right one was. My turn now, Martin Baker is a waste of time for old seats, so if anyone other than Jim Griff has any info on PR7 MB bang seats please drop me a line…………. thanks for reminding me Spade Grip. Bex

Bex, I have “Aircrew Equipment Assemblies AP 108B-0107-1” for the Mk 2CA seat and the “Illustrated Parts Catalogue AP 109B-0107-3A” if you’re interested? I could send you electronic copies in PDF format.
