Bit of a subjective opinion this, but I’ve always thought the twin-stick Harrier one of the ‘wrongest’ looking conversions of a single-seater ever! :diablo:
Things like the Hunter and Vampire, when converted to trainers, looked different but still very, very nice (in fact I think the Vampire T.11 looks the best of all the Vampires), even the Typhoon looks pretty good, but the Harrier just looks a bit odd.
What you end up with all depends what you’ve got to start with though I suppose. 😀
Fact: The Lightning (or at least a big part of it could be saved) given the will and way.
Fact: the hobby of aircraft preservation and history encompasses all from the armchair critics, modellers, toggies to the go getters and restorers. It is not up to me, or anyone else to ridicule anyone on this forum’s views or efforts in this fantastic hobby.
Good on you Tony. I’m with you 100% on this one.
If I had the storage space/money and if the current awkward owners would allow it, I’d have that cockpit section away in a flash and be delighted with it despite it’s current condition.
Judging by this thread a good many ‘commentators’ would say it’s nowt but scrap and a waste of money. Maybe, but it would be MY money and MY decision to go and try to preserve it. So, frankly, I wouldn’t give a toss.
Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll pass them on.
From Revell? It’ll probably be a Matchbox re-issue 😀
With panel lines that, if scaled up, you could hold a dance in! 😮
Actually I was told well over a year ago by someone who was “in the know” that it’s a ‘shrunken’ version of Revell’s 1/32nd scale Hunter. That wasn’t perfect but was pretty damn good, so fingers crossed…
I’m really looking forward to this too…

Could this be a decent 1/72nd Hunter at last?
I have to agree with you Dave, I fear Mr Ollerenshaw doesn’t really have a leg to stand on. The man, apparently, didn’t make any effort to examine what he was bidding a massive (well it is to me) amount of money on. His words “It’s just a rust bucket. Alarm bells rang the moment I saw it.” say it all really. Why not go and “see it” before bidding?
That’s nothing short of stupid in my view. Much as I dislike Mr Bateson’s methods I’m struggling to see how he “misled” anyone in this matter.
I know all this has been said before here, but the more this thing develops, the more unbelievably foolish this man appears. 🙁
What are you doing?
“Hi man. I’m drinking wine and eating cheese, and catching some rays, you know…”
Great film, great fun! 🙂
And is “Mr Ollerenshaw” the most Northern name ever? 😀
No, that’s “Willy Eckaslike” 🙂
Anybody know what happened then ?
As the Hunter was pulled from eBay a few days before its due date.
To cut a long story short Dave, it wasn’t theirs to sell (see my first post in this thread). The ‘misunderstanding’ has been cleared up now and so the auction has been pulled.
Is G-VETA in external storage? Shame if it is, it always looks special in the all-black colour scheme.
G-VETA was certainly stored outside on Saturday (as you can see from my photo) but doesn’t seem to be suffering from it. The Hunter Flying Club will be taking over a second hangar shortly so there’ll be much more space undercover. Incidentally, I gather the re-registration of G-VETA that was reportedly about to take place is now not happening.
Any pics of the Vampire you delivered ?
Hi Dave, here’s a couple of pics of XE985 just before we set off. Not much to look at in unrestored state, but the woodwork is in excellent condition and, hopefully, things will improve in due course!

Well here’s the piccie as promised. The quality’s not up to much I’m afraid. By the time we got there today is was just about to get dark so it was a bit hit and miss!

This question came up on a forum (not sure if it was this one or PPRuNe?) recently. I think the concensus was that it signified “armour plate”.
The same yellow disc appears on the back of the Mosquito pilot seat too.
Why ?
What have you bought now Mark ?
😀 😀
I bought the pod of Vampire T.11 XE985 from Gwyn Jones (the Red Bull Sea Vixen man) last year. My current storage arrangements have come to an end and so I’ve had to fall back on “Plan B” and store the old girl with some Hunter chums at Exeter until I can find somewhere closer to home.
MarkG see u on Sat
Will do. I’ll be easy to spot – I’ll be the one with a Vampire fuselage hanging off the back of the car! 🙂
