There’s a lovely picture of the one and only Qatari T.79 QA13 in the book Hunters by Ray Braybrook. It’s a bit naughty but I’ll see if I can scan it for you.

By the way, do you have a photo of any of the Qatari FGA.78s. There were only three of them but I’m particularly interested in QA12 as I am currently restoring the cockpit section – see my avatar!

    Hunter F.1 WT651 at Newark Air Museum…

No problem, hope it was useful.

If I remember correctly there are actually 7 or 8 Hunter F.1s still around plus a couple of cockpit sections.

Besides WT680 there are 2 others in Wales, one just up the M4 in Kenfig Hill (also owned by an ATC squadron) and another in Caernarfon. There’s also a fairly decent example at Newark Air Museum and one in Manchester that has had some of the skin panels removed to show the structure beneath. I think RAF Henlow used to have an F.1 as a gate guard.

I thought they had a Victor? Or is it elsewhere on the base rather than the gate?

Unfortunately they lost one of the PR.9s a few months back when it landed with the brakes on. Damage to the tailplane and fuselage was deemed unrepairable and I believe the airframe is soon to be scrapped. Shame. 🙁

    A few experienced ‘movers’ of Hunters are;

    – The Hunter Flying Club at Exeter (have a chat to John Sparks)
    – Barry Parkhouse of Parkhouse Aviation at Booker

PM me if you need contact details, I have e-mail addys and tel. nos etc..

As for the history of WT680 the only info I have is that she was built as part of the first production batch of 113 aircraft at Hawker’s Kingston-upon-Thames factory. She had her first flight on 6th Oct 1954, with Hawker test pilot Hugh Merewether at the helm, and was delivered to the RAF on 10th Nov 1954. The only squadron service I have listed is “West Raynham Station Flight”. Best bet is to get a copy of the movement card from the RAF Museum to confirm that though.

The last time I saw 680 she was painted in a totally inappropriate (for an F.1) late 54 Squadron colour scheme so I’m glad you’re planning something more accurate 🙂

Virgin have got it in their “4 for £20 or £5.99 each” sale in Cardiff.

Don’t know if that’s an indication of the quality of the film!

I think I agree with you there Alan, that sounds just about right to me. Interesting that the panel has been modded to take the later smaller diameter rate-of-climb indicator too. Does that tell us anything?

That hinge arrangement is bothering me a bit though. Not sure I’ve seen that on military aircraft before, and how do the lower shock mounts attach? I can see the two sets of holes at the top of the panel for the upper brackets (which presumably would contain Lord mounts or spring mounts or similar), but what about the bottom? Are those three tabs visible below the hinge line the mounting brackets?

“It’s my most beautiful aeroplane.” – Sir Sydney Camm

    obviously the Hurricane Mark!! 😉

I have to say I can (almost) agree with you there. Sydney Camm did have a certain knack didn’t he?!

I will have Bertie helping me with the display!! (Bertie is my BoB dummy!)

I trust he is devilishly handsome in keeping with the other CockpitFest exhibitors! 😮 😀

Good to see you back Tony. I was about to post something myself but you beat me to it!

There’s a full list of attendees on the International Cockpit Club website and it’s looking very interesting indeed, especially with the number of first-time visitors Tony mentioned. 🙂
