    So they have definitely chosen the Gripen NG?

    Who said anything about the French pilot lying? 😉

    @Amiga500
    I was paraphrasing a statement by one of the French members a few months ago, rather than giving my personal opinion on French and British engineers. It was claimed then that the RBE2AA would be superior, because French AESA modules would be superior, because French engineers are better than British engineers. This is of course not true 🙂 Personally I don’t have anything against French engineers, nor French members 😀

    @arthuro
    What is meant by “Switzerland being an “off-the-law” state”?

    But in all fairness, he is a FRENCH pilot. As for the comparison, it would be more realistic to compare the RBE2-AA and Captor-E ranges. Of course even when we know the module counts we sill have to disprove that “French engineers are better than British engineers” or else the RBE2-AA must be better regardless of the module count!

    I don’t think it’s a fair assessment to say the Conservatives don’t support industry. The difference between Labour and Conservative on industry is more that Labour want to keep the people employed at almost any cost, which is an admirable ambition, but someone has to pick up the cost of that. Getting down to the very basics of it, Conservatives want you to spend your money how you want, Labour and Lib Dems want to spend your money for you on whatever they think is best.

    That also largely applies to their closest relation parties Conservatives (UKIP), Lib Dems (Greens), Labour (BNP).

    Still pretty pointless killing him when he could be left in jail for life to think about what he’s done. Of course this would require life prison terms…

    EDIT: Also life without widescreen TV, double bed, sauna, gym, private health and mental care and whatever else they get inside!

    He looks like a real criminal, so he’ll probably get 2 weeks community service. Go drive 150mph on an empty motorway and you’ll get 2 years jail. Oh, and when you get home from court and you find your home has been broken into and you call the police they can’t send anyone out until next week because they are soooo busy!

    And they wonder why people aren’t that bothered about police and court staff pensions and pay?

    The MR will need modifications too, but the MR can be used for other purposes or sold, whereas the AEW radar’s only real potential is as the AEW on RN helos!

    Nope. Searchwater 2000 was installed 2002-2004.

    Thales has proposed fitting the systems from the Sea Kings to AW101 for the RN, with an overhaul & upgrade. Nobody has suggested using the MRA4 kit. AFAIK that’s for sale, unless the RAF can get some other MPAs to fit it into.

    Also known as Sea King AEW.7 / ASaCS.7

    The Scottish would rather just close English bases instead. Personally I can’t wait until they leave.

    Would probably be more in it for Italy if it were mounted on an Airbus. Is Italy going to get any workshare or the like from this deal at all?

    I’m sure many of you have seen this, but it could be some interesting background for those that haven’t:

    @Witcha
    I doubt APG-80 has a range of 300KM vs fighter sized targets, that would make it superior to the F22! Most ranges vs fighter targets I’ve seen for the APG-80 are under 150KM. 250KM could be the range again 50 elephants flying in close formation wrapped in tin foil? 😀

    I think its unlikely that this system will have two APG-80 style radars either, the power requirements when adding in the stations would be immense, especially from a helicopter (and something like a Merlin already has one radar!).

    Here is a source for the Searchwater 1 AEW range, though the current system should outperform it.

    “Searchwater 1 AEW is quoted as having a maximum detection range of between 113 and 161 km when focused on a 7 m² radar cross-section target at an operating altitude of 3,408 m.”

    http://articles.janes.com/articles/Janes-Electronic-Mission-Aircraft/Searchwater-1-AEW-United-Kingdom.html

    According to the following source, the Searchwater 2000 gets 30% to 40% more range. At 30%, the range would be 147km to 209km.
