    Oh yea the French have been talking about active cancellation since forever. Just an internet rumour with some translation errors, oh and a bit of misinformation from Sampaix. Active cancellation for Rafale is IMO, referring to the AESA module upgrades for SPECTRA which are “active” instead of the current “passive” PESA modules, not proper cancellation of an enemies radar emissions with an equal and opposite emission.

    The Swedish stealth Gripen is a University project and isn’t likely to go anywhere.

    As for why no stealth Euro fighters? Not worth the cost when the countries are already cutting back on the current aircraft types! If they had the money available they’d be better off investing it into more of the current aircraft (Typhoon, Rafale, Gripen, F35).

    @Hotdog
    That particular picture is a photoshop. It shows a BAE Replica style aircraft at the Qinetiq facility in Boscombe Down, when the actual BAE Replica had the work done at BAE in Warton, Lancashire! There is only one known picture of BAE Replica, upside down in a hangar, in quite low resolution from the New Scientist magazine.

    The jobs would be mostly the same as are currently there, and would probably use the same machines (assuming they aren’t too worn). Composite parts, AESA radars ect…

    The price of something is what two side are willing to agree. If the UK hadn’t accepted this offer, what would they have got?
    Scrap value, which is a lot less.
    And USMC could have bought spares elsewhere, but paid more.

    So both sides won out of the deal.

    FWIW a lot of electronics was removed some time ago to be re-used elsewhere where applicable

    Except that its a 99% win for the USMC and pretty much a lose for the RN/RAF. As I said, they got raped. The UK has no room to negotiate anything, the government will happily sell of anything for well under its real value, as has been seen numerous times before. Just look how Gordon Brown sold off our gold reserves. It doesn’t surprise me at all, in fact, I expect such poor decisions from the government, civil service and military leadership! I wonder who they will give half our Challenger 2 tanks to for free? 😎

    @Geoff_B

    It is impossible to balance the books as every government slashes the money available. So really, they need to budget for less money every few years. Of course even if they did that, they would be deemed to have a surplus and that slack would be taken away too! It has been quite entertaining to see Dave Cameron try to talk like the statesman from a great world power, with no aircraft carriers and very few aircraft available to deploy.

    @Nicolas10

    But Eurofighter is a much better plane, especially in air to air, so it evens out 😀

    @Spitfire9

    UAE could also get maintenance done in Saudi with the Typhoon.

    Both have big radars and neither can go around corners. F14 is more of a fighter, but Tornado F3 probably has the edge in combat systems by the end.

    @JT442

    Oh the phoenix is garbage. Both had newer AMRAAM, but no midcourse update capability for the F3 IIRC. Not sure if the F14 could do the midcourse update either?

    @arquebus

    Would have been a threat to the Mirage series though.

    That’s true, they are printing the money. They also have huge loans, which must be guaranteed by something, or someone. Who? The future generations of course! These are also the same people that will be paying for their pensions, but probably won’t receive one themselves. It is quite funny then, when I hear middle aged men today describe the youth of today as being lazy, useless ect!

    I think the best thing to remember today is that just because the government say you should run into the enemy’s machine gun fire to gain 10ft of land, doesn’t mean it’s a good idea, nor that you should do it.

    I guess if the news in the US is covering a basketball game on an aircraft carrier with President Osama, then they won’t be covering the impeding second recession. I wonder what they will do they day after? Baseball game with grenades?
