RE: What is your favourite ‘Holiday Airport’ ?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-11-02 AT 09:11 PM (GMT)]HON Honalulu, Hawaii
Lots of great long haul and regional commercial aircraft combined with military transport and air defense AC. C-17 C-5 C-141 share the ramp with F-15’s on alert status. There is even an outside chance you will see the space Shuttle there as HON is one of the designated emergency landing sites.
Hawaii no ka ‘oi (Hawaii is the very best)

RE: Useless fact for 1 november
Sometimes there are reasons for dumb laws. Dumb reasons sometimes, but reasons never the less.
Texas has some really interesting laws, my personal favorite is the: “He needed killing law.” This is a principle were a defendant can claim that the victim was so nasty, he deserved to die.
The restriction on taking shellfish at night is probably to insure that Texas fishermen do not work overtime.
Another dumb law is that you can not buy a car in Detroit (car capitol of the world) on the weekend. this is to insure that car dealers get the weekend off.

RE: Least Favourite Beer
Here in the US, we have so many choices. Where do I begin?
The US used to have a wide variety of wonderful, full bodied regional beers that rivaled the beers of the world. But in the 1920’s the US entered a terrible dark period when all alcohol was banned! The small regional breweries died and only a few large brewers struggled on by selling milled grains, etc.
Once the taps were turned back on in the 1930’s, American’s taste in beer had changed. A combination of large brewers serving larger regions, more women in the work place (and in the taverns) and a generation of Americans learning to drink for the first time drove the US brewers to make a lighter, sweeter brew. Brewing industry consolidation in the post WW2 era has created three huge US brewers that serve 90% of the US market.
There is a growing market for darker, richer beers in the US and we do have access to wonder local and international beers. But the mass market over here is pretty dismal.
Bud, Coors, and Miller are horrible swill. Samuel Adams is a reasonably good lager that is brewed to German beer purity law standards.
How is making love in a canoe like American beer?
Because they both are f*cking close to water.

RE: Which countries build the best cars and why?
I vote for Australia. The Ozies stuff large displacement, high compression Yank engines into sleek, modern bodies that can cruise at high speed all day in the blistering Outback.
Here in the US, we can only wish for the type of machinery our indegenous automobile industry sells only Down Under. GM is the first US company to import a left hand drive version of a Holden to sell up here are the newest Pontiac GTO.
I would also vote for Honda. They build more engines than any other company in the world. The saying here in California is that “Honda is an engine maker that also happens to sell cars.”

RE: LAX – SFO
Here is a little secret about the LAX-SFO route. Avoid SFO if you can. OAK (Oakland) is actually closer to the city of San Francisco and easier to get in and out of.
Southwest Airlines is cheap…. that is the only good thing I can say about them. Their terminals are mob scenes that remind me of the footage of the last 727 to get out of Da Nang.

RE: Dambusters meets Star Wars … and 633 Squadron?
Snoopy,
Absolutely right on!
“633 Squadron” was Mosquitos taking out a German factory placed up a Noregian Fjord. Rent this movie and you will see were Lucas lifted scenes shot for shot.
The truth of the matter is that the orginal Star Wars was an “homage” (better than saying a rip off) to so many great old movies from Westerns to War Films.
RE: Quiz: Name that movie.
From Ice Station Zebra:
“Our German scientists developed the camera, which was attached to the lens developed by the British German scientists, which was lifted into orbit by the rocket built by the Russian German scientists.”
From M*A*S*H:
“How did a man like that become an officer in the US Army?”
“He was drafted.”
From Patton:
“They call him Blood and Guts.”
“Yeah, our blood and our guts.”
From Full Metal Jacket:
“This is my friend Charlie. Be quiet, he’s sleeping.”
RE: Pic Of The Day-DC 6!
I have seen this plane in action over brushfires in Los Angeles County California as recently as two or three years ago.
As we get more than our fair share of brushfires here in California, we get some interesting firefighting aircraft. 412’s, Skycrane’s and Canair Super Scoopers are the most common locally. P-3’s, C130’s and C-2’s are also seen in the Western US.
Does anyone have a collection of fire fighting aircraft to share?
