    This overblown time-wasting debate

GD in a nutshell. But isn’t that the point?

UKIP’s true colours are starting to show.

The thin end of the wedge

The police? Seriously? They’ll be burning books next……

I watched “Blazing Saddles” the other night and nowadays it is difficult to watch without being acutely aware of the language. However it doesn’t denigrate black people, quite the reverse in fact and I doubt if Richard Pryor would have been associated with it if it had.
….and it is still one of the funny films ever made.

it shouldn’t matter if it was trying to be insulting or not the word was said simple as that it shouldn’t be one rule for one and another rule for another

Of course it’s about intent or not. That’s the whole point!

Same question to snafu. Do you think Elvis Costello was trying to be insulting to black people when he said?

    Only takes one itchy trigger
One more widow, one less white nigger

    Again, I would suggest not.

Well it would be if that was actually what happened.

“A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Police confirmed today that the visit had occurred but said they had not told Mr Abberton to delete any tweets.

“We were called with a complaint about a message on social media at about 12.40pm on Friday.”

The concern should be about the complainant. The police were legitimately following up a complaint. It all came to nothing so yet another example of the media creating a story where there isn’t one, or certainly not one worth spending time on.

So that is what happened as your quote states. UKIP complained about someone daring to criticize their policies so complained to the police.

Not worth spending time on – I guess you could say that about the whole forum.

I make no reference to long queues and immigrants.

    Yes you did.

At what point do we stop importing people? There is, on a finite island only so much space. I’ve been flying over much of Britain for over fifty years and I’ve witnessed the changes. Around my home airfield, I’ve seen the green field infill and still it goes on.

I know everyone has to live somewhere but, when do we stop? 70, 80 or 100 million ? During the most mundane activity on a day-to-day or, weekly basis, whether it be shopping at the supermarket or buying fuel, one has to queue.

My bolding of your quote. The implication is clear. As is the furious back-pedaling.

I’m trying to think of a 20th or even 21st century conflict that wasn’t caused by nationalism/imperialism or ideology. I can see that territorial desires may be driven by resources but the root cause is still nationalism. When Hitler wanted to create lebensraum he did it under a German national flag.

Urrrrrrrgh ukip’s antics are making my blood boil more and more by the day… and I am concerned by what I read around various posts on social network sites at how many people are falling for their bull**** .

If ukip put a stop to immigration, and there are still no jobs, I wonder who people would turn on next? homosexuals? The disabled? Women?

When did everyone become so hateful? Surely humans are better united? The world is changing, more and more cultures are starting to entwine with each other. It’s time people started embracing it, rather than creating propaganda to feed peoples’ fear and hate. No amount of ‘foreigners’ are going to stop you being English/Scottish/Welsh/ whatever.

All my opinion of course. I feel better for getting that off my chest.

    I can’t disagree with that.

Nationalism and to a lesser extent religion/ideology have been the causes of the vast majority of wars and conflicts and yet we still tolerate and indeed celebrate it. This forum had a thread that derided organized religion has a root cause for for many problems and yet nationalism with its symbolism and flag-waving goes unchallenged.

I also doubt that queues are longer due to immigration. It is much more likely to be due to reduction in services and staff, more OAPs, more leisure time, and any number of other factors. Blaming immigration is sadly typical of the right wing requirement for a scapegoat for everything.

As I’ve said often enough, free speech has never meant that that you can say what you like. The laws of libel and incitment to racial or religious hatred make sure of that.

Should the BNP broadcast have been censored? Probably not but I didn’t watch it and nor am I likely to either. Their leaflet with some rather dubious imagery was enough proof to me of their intentions. Let’s face it if the BNP ever got anywhere near the handles of power, censoring party political broadcasts would be the least of our problems.

Of course UKIP aren’t too keen on this freedom of speech thing either as events in Cambridge showed last week.

What’s wrong with first names? Resepct has to be earned and has nothing to do with what we call people.

In the business world, first names have been used as long as I’ve worked in industry (28 years). I’m pretty certain that it hasn’t reduced respect for people in senior positions just by calling them by their first name. I don’t think we doff our caps any more either.

    Re 163

Your quote. Nothing to do with people moving from the South East. But you knew that.

What was it you said about wriggling?

    From Nigel Farage in 2010

“Let me make this clear to you: UKIP is not against immigration. We welcome immigration; we want immigration.”

    How odd…..

I’d better be careful. I don’t want the police around…….

    Bob’s second sentence however……

What Bob is advocatiing is blind loyalty – regardless of what happens. If there are instances of abuse and war crimes what then? Should we still support the guilty?

If we want to continue to be the good guys and adopt the moral high ground then we must behave as such and any alleged abuses need to be investigated.
Any abuse acts as a recruitment tool for the enemy.

Indeed. It may be a lot less of an issue than Farage and (sorry I can’t think of any other UKIP people) might think. The UK population are probably more interested in issues like unemployment, the economy, the environment, law and order, defence, etc. in which UKIP have shown an almost total disinterest.

At the moment the BBC is giving UKIP vote as 27.5% of a 34.19% turnout which I reckon means 9.4% of the electorate voted UKIP. The turnout is a bigger concern and how anyone can take any comfort from the fact the 2/3rds didn’t even vote. Farage may think that he is reflecting what the British people think but when only a 1/3rd bother to vote then that claim sounds very hollow.

Perhaps when the dust settles after this “earthquake” then UKIP can be questioned about policies other then the EU or immigration. That should prove interesting. Their last manifesto looked as if it had been taken from a 12-year-old’s “When I’m Prime Minister” assignment.
