Thanks buddy, thats the station i was looking at earlier. I’ll contact him and see what i can find. 😀
Thanks for all the information guys, its very much appreciated. I’ll try and find out as much extra information as i can. Would be strange if that is my man, as i’m going to Detroit, MI in a couple of weeks, where he is buried! Its a shame there is not any more info about his career on there, i’ll see what bomber units were based in Pensylvania that were based in the UK at the time.
Thanks guys!
Fighter Jet (?) departing Manston
Just heard and got a very vague glimpse of a jet taking off from Manston, did not have my glasses on so couldn’t quite make out what it was, possibly a Hawk or Harrier, but i can’t be certain. Anyone know what it was?
Also saw a BAC One-Eleven coming in to Manston a few days ago.
If my memory serves from i book i read many moons ago, it was originally designed on the principle of developing a STOL variant, designed to work on hastily assembled and short runways in the event that the ruskies got the ass.
This was around the time Hawker-Sid’ was developing the Kestrel Harrier prototype, and eventually this project was abandoned in favour of the more effective Harrier.
i belive the Halifax had removable panels above where the bombs were held, which could be partially removed for emergency access to the bombs. The Lancasters were fixed.
The Halifax also had bomb cells in the wings.
Never knew the Halifax had bomb cells in the wings, thought it was just the Stirling……any photos of these please ?
No, sorry :S.
Been trying to find pictures of them everywhere…
Would of been in Michigan at that time if it weren’t for the ******* immigration officials denying me entry earlier this month :@
If Fifi and Ol’ 927 joined them for that, it would be truly incredible.
Chris,
Thanks for the link, interesting stuff.
I’m up there tomorrow, so i shall ask about it. Was lucky enough to be in the terminal a few weeks ago when 3 RAF puma’s came in for refuelling, i thought a while back a decision was made to ground the puma fleet for a few months to save money/increase airframe life? Didn’t seem to make much sense, can anyone confirm that, or did i make that up?
I thought they was grounded due to concerns over the gearbox after the series of crashes involving it.
Bargain, 130 grand, not too shabby at all.
At that price, I’ll take the Kubelwagen and the Steyr as well.
183 Squadron’s code letters would of been HF. Not sure on what the third letter could of been.
You could try emailing the RAF directly, they must have details in the 183 Sqd. archives.
Or you could possibly even try getting in contact with the Spitfire musuem at former RAF Manston in Kent, both 183 and 198 Sqd. were based there up until around 43.
Does “your source” know the timings?
No not sure, i’ll see him tomorrow, so i’ll find out.
Anyone know the timings for the 124?
Oh, my bad, i just noticed the timings, thanks 225hvy, am i correct in saying its arriving at 0700 hrs and departing at 0830?
I’m not completely kosher with all the airport code terms :S
Just recieved some new information, The An-124 is coming in on sunday evening at 6:30pm, and its departing on Monday morning, and the Il-96 is coming in Thursday at 3:30pm, not sure on departure date. Apparently the 124 is picking up a Cummins generator, but what the IL-96T is picking up is hushed up. Not jumping to conclusions, but Polet airlines operate both IL-96’s and 124’s, so could possibly be there? My source works at Manston, so its kosher information.
What is the significance of this on a historic aviation forum?
Am I missing something here?
As significant as someone saying they’ve just spotted a Chinook on the “Spotted” thread.
Additionally, you may want to tell whoever posted this thread the same thing –

The arrival of a plane which is historically documented as one of the largest planes ever built, landing at a historic airfield is fairly relevent to this forum, if it offends you, then you don’t have to look at it?
No disrespect to you of course, if I’ve posted in the wrong area, i apologise, I’m a fairly new user.
C’mon, we’re all aviation lovers right? 😀
A true privilege to whoever is witnessing this, a good cause, and a amazing story to witness.
Thanks for your serious reply Dave .Considering where this came from i very much doubt the deceased ex-raf service man went into making copies of combat reports!!!.Not everything out there should be jumped on as a forgery this was never sold as a forgery and is real and is as stated belonging origionally to the Hampden and not a spitfire.
I’ve got a book entitled “The war in the air: 1939 – 1945” and there are several different accounts of maintainence forms being switched due to different reasons, so i wouldn’t worry about its authenticity.
