I looked in the airshow guide in the latest Flypast, and saw a picture of a Canberra in flight, I think it was the Kemble one or WK163.
I thought i was gonna see one on the circuit this year 🙁

any crash is a tragedy, this one no less so,
but “worlds worst” is as stated a bit of a misleading statement.
Yes it may have been the worst in terms of single event loss at the time, I am not sure, one could say there were many many days during the war which there were losses far greater,
and if we want to mention dates, the crash of the Wright Military flyer on Sept 17, 1908, killing Lt Thomas Selfridge, and injuring Orville Wright, was the first “worlds worst”
Where do we stop with such a definition?
Tenerife is still the greatest loss of life in a single air crash event.
lets hope it is never eclipsed.

I think any crash which is affects you personally is the “worst”

Couldn’t put it any differently myself. Personally, the crash that affected me the most was JAL 123 (explosive decom. lost tail, hydraulic systems – crashed into mountain)
But there could be a crash where 2 people died, the relative to either one of the given people would probably class that as the worst one, but at least with every air disaster, lessons are learned, and safety increases more with each occurance, which thankfully are few and far between now.

I’ll echo everybody elses thoughts. If someone on here did not want to see a Shackie fly, then they do not deserve to registered with this forum! Being young, I’ve never seen one fly myself, but I’d love to – Just the thought of Avro’s 3 leading ladies flying together at an airshow makes my knees go weak…
Just a thought though, the RAF spends £50mil on the Lanc each year alone (aside from the Hurricanes, Spitty’s, the Dak, Chipmunks etc….
Definitely have my full support, I already support the other certain Avro, how could i refuse another 😀
Good luck and keep us all updated 😀

Lets just hope that if you do get the ball rolling on the Shack, that its managed better than what the group of clowns who are overseeing the Vulcan’s constant and nervewrecking struggle to survive are managing.

Could this be N151MW “Lady Alice”?

That’s a T-51, and i remember hearing “Hirani Oil Arizona” mentioned before in relation?

Whoever or whatever the circumstances, it’s a bloody shame to lose another priceless aircraft and a brave bloke.
Thoughts with his family and so forth

Got to take your hats off to the pilots and crew – A (reasonably) safe landing, and a speedy evac under pressure.
    When did this occur?

Apologies for late reply, but theres most likely not going to be any dates listed until the engineering program has nearly finished, when they can realistically give any dates.

One thing I will say is that I have read in several magazines and papers on numerous occasions that the whole automation thing is making the pilots less alert in modern cockpits. They do more monitoring than they do flying. They get tired quickly and miss things easier.

Does the A330 has a “joystick shaker”? Is it as loud and obtrusive as the traditional yoke “stick shaker”? Perhaps something like that might have alerted the crew to problems a little sooner?

The automation subject has been the subject of many different documentries, It’s become a common debate if pilots are really in control of modern commercial airliners, or if its actually the computer.
As for the shaker, I remember when i was young, I sat in the cockpit of a Airbus A320, and remember the pilot showing me the joystick that he controlled the plane with, quite small and offset to the right, like the handbrake on a car down the right hand side of the seat (or left hand side for LHD cars)
Reading your point, I’d say that is probably is not as ‘obvious’ as a traditional yoke shaker.
Quite a few accidents involving Airbus aircraft have been due to the confusion over who is actually meant to be doing any given task, such as Air France 296, Indian Airlines 605, Air Inter 148, Armavia 967 to name a few – Where as the amount of incidents involving Boeing aircraft under similar circumstances is much less.
Incorporating technology into aircraft is great, but I personally belive that there is only so much computers should do, over reliance on systems is bound to cause problems.

It’s so sad to think that a generation of people are slowly leaving us – To think in a decade or so, there is probably going be nobody to tell us the story of what happened during WW2, is very sad.

Thanks for the replies, i had a feeling it was to do with the bypass ratio, but i wasn’t sure exactly how, now i finally know! And Paul, some great snaps on your flickr – have you uploaded many to airliners.net? Got some nice basses too 🙂
