The rest of my post was about aviation, i was only using that quote in context to illustrate the point of the topic.
My apologies.
Sorry, I’ve worked on enough aircraft, bits of aircraft and other machines to know they don’t have souls – it’s all just engineering….. but I do know they can be bloody awkward at times, you’d swear they had personalities….
Kind Regards.
Scotty
Haha! Same only tinkered with a Merlin once during a apprenticeship, so not that experienced, but i’ve worked on a few cars to agree with the same principle!
We all know they are on paper just engineering, but its how they make you feel that makes you belive there is a soul inside them.
I digress before i start going too off topic!
£3500? It’s pretty cool, but it doesn’t appear to warrant that sort of price, i mean it’s only half an Airbus 😀
As for 8 months, if he is married, then i feel sorry for his partner 🙂
Sounds like a B grade Hollywood movie plot doesn’t it
Knew it sounded familiar…
Poor guy – obviously had just the right amount of conscience to walk away and come back before he did anything stupid.
But lucky they got him out of the business before anything did happen.
Absolutely ridiculous. A typical example of PC nonsense trying to overthrow a useful and necessary use
When you consider this comes from the same world as the ban of “Ba Ba Black sheep” on the grounds of being racist, it’s not really suprising.
I would of thought the safety of passengers would be a immovable barrier.
I can’t imagine hearing the news of a Lockerbie-esque incident on the news, and thinking “Well, X amount of children died on that, but, at least their innocence was not harmed at all”.
With the age we are in now, safety is not something that can be comprimised. Period.
It’s a machine, not a dog – a machine which at the moment is still serving a purpose, in helping to keep one Vulcan airborne and will eventually help preserve others.
Best just let it serve its final purpose, then scrap what remains. Other than the colour scheme, she’s not that unique otherwise, best concentrate on the other Vulcans it can save.
That is a fair point, but I’m on of the people that belive machines have a soul, so to me, it is a dog 😀
I do hear you in your point though, I suppose that its somewhat necessary for one to die to save lots of others.
I’ve heard that quote from a film somewhere before….
Truly sad the the Vark’s days are now literally numbered.
I’m speaking on a purely selfish basis here, but throwing on the scrapheap and probably ending up on a baked bean tin somewhere is just cruel, to a machine that, as you said, has faithfully served its country.
The saddest thing though, with the Phantom’s of the several airforces either being or on the verge of being replaced by the new breed, is that the ‘muscle plane’ era is disappearing – All the low bypass giants are starting to thin out.
Still, I’ll remain optimistic that at least one will keep flying, (Preferebly in the UK :D) and i also suspect Thunder City would be interested in one of these fantastic aircraft too, but guaging by the fact no Tomcats have flown since its (majority) retirement, it doesn’t look promising.
Just spoke to a friend who was a Vulcan pilot during the 70’s, to his knowledge, the V’s were never based in India.
Put the girl to rest before she worsens, its cruel.
Ultimate wish list for 2010? It’s gotta be Fifi…
You are right Jon – It just angers me that such a wondrous machine is going to go to the chop, I just wish it would happen sooner, its been on death row for a long time and its almost painful seeing her sit there, waiting for the inevitable JCB’s to arrive.
Couldn’t agree with you more.
I don’t know what the bloody hell BAe are playing at, out of all the airframes they can choose to use for all this destructive testing, they use one of these? Banning volunteers from it, and no photos? its bloody ridiculous. I can understand that the itchy red blanket of the aviation world, H & S, is to blame, but still…
As others have pointed out, she’ll still live on in other aircraft, but at the end of the day, she is still going to be scrapped.
Had the pleasure of meeting Bob many years back – Was either Manston or Biggin, i was only about 9 or 10 at the time. Not often you meet someone who did what he did, but would yet be so humble, and what a true gentlemen as well.
But what I do recall him saying a statement, that just shows what a modest person he was, and is is something will stay with me forever – “I do not appreciate it when people assume that because i was a Spitfire ace, that i was a hero – The brave young fellows that i took off with, and never got to finish the bars of chocolate we was sharing, they were the real heroes”
Such a sad thing to think in 10-15 years time, there is probably going to be none of these incredible people about to tell us all the story of what they saw, and what they fought for. The “Few” are certainly (and unfortunately) living up to their namesake now.
Let their sacrifices never be forgotten.
Thank you for inspiring me Bob, and “Tally-ho”
It’s like seeing someone dying with a terminal illness 🙁
I would hope that someone intervenes at the 11th hour and rescues her, how could you scrap something like this?
Just saw on the news that Bob Doe was buried today in Suffolk. I saw a Spit this morning flying low at 10:10 over Margate as i mentioned previously – does anybody know what Spitfire it was that done a flypast at his burial?
