the only non F-15 kill of a MiG-25 was made by an USAF F-16 and with an AMRAAM

What about the Mig 25 shot down by an Iranian F-5E using GUNS???:D

When I picked the MiG-23, what I meant was that although it has very good performance, esp speed and accelaration, I did not pick it for such reasons. The MiG 23, often overlooked by the MiG-21 and the later MiG-29, it was the first Soviet fighter to combine speed with a useful range and a half decent weapon load. It did for the Soviets what the F-4 did a decade earlier for the U.S, NATO and many other air forces.

The MiG-17, 19 and 21 as well as the Su-7, 9, 11, and 15 and the Tu-128 were all very decent fighters and had thier individual strengths. However, they were either too short ranged, too short on weapons or too specialised.

The MiG-23 could arguably do the job of all the above types, perhaps with the exception of the Tu-128 which as a monster fighter had fantastic range. That said, the MiG-23 was more tactically useful.

This is similar to the F-4 which could arguably do the job of the F-100, F/RF-101, F-102, F-104, F-105, F-1O6 and the F-8.

O.K., will try to provide a meaningful alternative to the above suggestions…

    1) A-5 Vigilante. OK, mediocre performance as a strike platform, spent most of its carrer as a recce plane. However, considering it flew in the LATE FIFTIES, it is nothing short of revolutionary in terms of its design and onboard systems. It really broke the mould and became an inspiration for more modern types such as the F-14, F-15, Mig-25, etc.

    2) Mirage III. The first truly supersonic Euro fighter to have mass export appeal.

    3) F-5 Freedom Fighter / Tiger II. Along with the F104, the western equialent to the MiG-21. Gave many airforces their first true supersonic fighter.

    4) A-4 Skyhawk. The lite attack equivalent to the F-5 and MiG-21. Small, quick and nimble, it could carry more than its empty weight in weapons. Also gave a number of navies their only viable fast jet capabilty, due to thier small aircraft carriers.

    5) F-111. The first long range sriker with terrain following radar.

    6) P-3 Orion. The defacto maritime patrol and ASW platform.

    7) MiG-23. Not because of performance but because it was the first really useful Soviet fighter. The MiG-17, 19 and 21 were more agile but were short on range and weapons capabilty. The MiG-23 was a much better all rounder.

    8) C-130. THE transport workhorse and airlift backbone for many airforces. Serves on EVERY continent.

    9) UH-1. The definative military chopper. This could perhaps be shared with types such as the S-61 / Sea King, Mi-8 Hip, and the Bell 47.

    10) Help….could not decide??? SR-71?, E-2 Hawkeye?, E-3 Sentry?, Harrier?, Su-27?,

Many if most do not. Why are there so many British newspapers on sale, Sun, News of the World, Mirror, etc.? Yes, I know people want to get news from home, but how many could read a Spanish or french newspaper end to end?

Saw a program a few months ago (CH4 I think) I think it was one of those about couples relocating abroad. This episode involved a Scottish couple who were making the move to Spain and made at least some effort to learn Spanish. When they got to Spain, they were “frustrated” as they kept running into British ex-pats who did not speak Spanish , just English. This couple had no opportunity to practice thier Spanish linguistic skills.

The trouble was that they went to the popular coastal holiday resorts, poulated by Brits. They had to go more inland to find the more “authentic” Spain. (Their words)

And how many Brits learn the native tounge before deciding to live in Spain, France, Portugal, etc.

I’d wager you’d find a higher % of Chinese who can speak reasonable to good English than vice versa (even if we included those in Britain of Chinese decent)

Strange how no-one mentions the F-22? This A/C has a pancake flat under-belly which surley provides a hell of a lot of lift. Esp considering its broadness.
