Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwnnn!
You chaps wake me up when you’re done, PLEASE..!!:o
Er..
i did say that the AIM- 9L could take head on shots with a reasonable chance of success, not a dead cert of a kill.
The AIM-9L was in no way perfect, probably not the best in its class when introduced. Howevere compared to prevoius Sidewinders, it was a revolutionary design.
In Vietnamthere were tales of early model Sidewinders locking onto the sun when launched as this provided a greater heat source than the side of a MIG-19. To kill a jet in those days, a pilot HAD to manouver onto an opponents tail to get a kill with a IR AAM. Easier said than done, hence the developmnt of all aspect AAM’s.
P.S. As far as loaning a carrier to Britain during the Falklands war, I did read somewhere the a request had been made to the US to lease one of their E-3 Sentry’s. The request was yurned down I think I remember….but don’t quote me on that, I can just about remember the material…..:D
Hmm..
This comparison would make more sense if, and only if the F-16’s are equipped with AMRAAM’s (or eqiv.). If not, then I’d say the SU-30 will have a rather big advantage.
Well, on paper the Argentine AF should have made mincemeat out of the RN (Royal Navy) Harrier fleet. However, in reality, thins are not always so simple.
Firstly, although the Argentine AF had the Mirage a fine fighter, which was combat proven by the Isreali’s, and was twice as fast as the Harrier, it was also a poorer dogfighter. This would be less of a problem if the Argentines had F-4’s, which would have had some chace at killing Harriers with Sparrows (had the US sold the missiles too, big if…!!??). As such the Mirage and the Harrier, being equipped with short range IR AAM’s and guns had to get in close. The Harrier had the advantages in a tight fight.
Secondly, the Sea Harriers were equpped with AIM-9L sidewinders. The L version of the Sidewinder was an “all aspect” weapon. Thi means the Harrier did not have to stay on the hot tail of a Mirage, but could take side on and even head on shots
with reasonable success.
Thirdly, the Argentine AF Mirage had a thirsty turbojet engine. Once it approached the British Task Force over the Falklands, the fuel situation became critical, so much so that the Mirage could barley survive five minutes worth of combat with the Harrier without running out of juice. Made the Mirage less effective as a fighter. This gave the Harrier a massive advantage. Their mobile bases, the carriers, were always closer to the Harriers, than Argentina was to the Mirage Fighters. Remember, the Falklands (Malvinas) are around 400 miles (650km) from Argentina.
There are cother issues of course such as training, threat of Vulcan bombing raids on Argentine airfields etc.
No no no. You still do not get it. It is not called Great Britain because it did anything great. Well actually ‘some’ of things it did were great but thats still not the reason. For instance. The surrounding environs of London are known collectively as ‘Greater London’ or “London plus if you like…….”, same with all the big cities, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff etc. The United Kingdom (and I know this has been explained; you are just not taking any notice because you are too tied up with your rhetoric and your hang ups and you’re ‘living in the past by the way.) is made up of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland etc. People from the United Arab Emirates might recognise the setup.
AT LAST, someone who understands what I mentioned in my earlier post.
This reminds me of a radio phone discussion prog, about Britishness I listened to a few months ago. An Irishman phoned in to object to the island of Ireland (esp. the Irish Rep.) being included in the British Isles. It had to be explained to him that the term British Isles is a GEOGRAPHICAL one, which includes the major islands of Great Britain, Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Isle of Wight, the Hebrides, the Orkneys, the Shetland Islaes, etc. It is not a POLITICAL description.
Unfortunatley, I feel too many people are loosing a sense of their own as well as world history. At the same time too many people seem to want to live in the past, not just by decades, but by centuries and not want to even live in the present, let alone face the future. Hence centuries old conflicts in the Balkans, N.Ireland, the Middle East etc.
P.S. Should’nt there be a general topic forum for this sort of stuff…??
P.P.S. Phil Foster, you forgot to mention Leeds in the list of British cities….;)
“The ‘Great’ in GB has nothing to do with the status of the country. It is a geographical description, since Great Britain is by far the largest island of the British Isles.
The full name of the country indicates this, as it is: The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The reason that GB for Great Britain is in common use (rather than the more accurate UK for United Kingdom) is probably down to the fact that Northern Ireland, for some reason, has its own car ID plates, so ‘GB’ is used for the rest of the UK.”
Tut tut….
I think this thread exposes the fact that most of you guys have little or no sense of history, which I for one find a little troubling.
This can be summed up by the above example.
Prob something to do with the immaturity of most forum members. Perhaps too many “kids”.
The term Great Britain has NOTHING, repeat NOTHING to do with Britains economic, industrial, cultural, social or military prowess.
Nor is it about GB being used for the “rest of the UK and not Northern Ireland”.
Look at a European atlas. Look at northern France and you’ll see a peninsula called Brittany. It used to be called “Little Britanny” or “Little Britain” as opposed to “Great Britain, the much bigger (greater in size) island to the north.
“Tell that rather to Americans… With no intentions to insult anybody from the US I think the number of weapons they develop, produce, and use is simply insane..”
…perhaps…
…however you must, like most on this forum, at least like looking that huge amount of US hardware (as well as Russian, Brit, French, Chinese, Israeli, etc) or else you would not be here…right…???
Go on, admit it, i’m right arn’t I…??
The sight of a B-1B of F-117 must make you so aroused…..:D
I dunno….
….flying at 200ft or less in an A-6 Intruder or F-111 / FB-111 carrying one or 2 dozen Mk 82 500 pounders, doing 550 – 600 mph at nite, in ‘orrible weather….
Challenging of course, difficult, yep. However for pure hair raising, adrenalin seeking, can’t be beat…
…or perhaps in an AC-130 taking out the trash with a 105mm (?)cannon…
“Bollox! I don’t mind having these conversations so long as those I am talking to have the first idea what they are talking about. Its clear this is not the case so once again I say bollox!
You don’t like Britain? Well FU! You know little or nothing about it. Learn your subject before you utter what you regard as ‘facts’ about it. You want to sell Britain down the river? Give up on her? Why exactly? Go away and get an education.”
Haaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!
Funniest response in this whole forum ever me thinx.
Seroiusly, I think this forum is loosing it’s way…..if it’s not done so already.
People should…
a) Stick to the subject.
b) Stick to what they know and not what they THINK they know.
Most insults in this forum are childish and pathetic. I wonder if they’d be said face to face…….

Wot aboot the A-12 Avenger..? Stealthy as hell. A mini B-2 with the ability to operate from a flight deck.
The TSR-2 is NOT repeat NOT ugly. It is a very sleak machine esp from sideways on. Now fitted with 30 – 35,000lb thrust turbofans and you have high spead and even gereater range.
Other aircraft to consider….
Tripple engined A-5 interceptor
F-103
F-108
FB-111H
