A shopkeeper in Town has always has a Lotus, and he spends shed loads on repairs, he told me once, what lotus owners state what Lotus means,
    LOTS Of TROUBLE USUALY SERIOUS.
Sad realy because if they tried, they could make a half decent car. 🙂

to some degree that is true , but only because most owners don’t apreciate what the old lotuses were

they were never designed to be a town car as a race develloped car they thrived on being thrashed !! slow town running did them no favours

add to that people not apreciating just how much you did have to spend on this type of car to keep it in good order ( escort service intervals and bills they were not ) you can sink a fortune into one just to keep the backbone chassis in order before you even start on the engines ( wich have all thier own idiosyncracies )

he had the lotus cortina mk 2 in the rarer maroon and gold colour scheme , there was also one of the gold leaf baby elans in the showroom and the limmited edition one think it is an elan 2+2 still resides under a cover in his showroom where it has sat for over the last 20 yrs or more without going out !!;)

take away the rose tinted spectacles , as something that is rarely said is the e type wasn’t even that good back in the day !!

a friend got an inherritance in the late 60’s early 70’s and could have easily afforded the e type as it was on his list of considdered cars

however he knew where there was a lotus elan limmited edition with coventry climax engine that a certain lotus dealer could not get started languishing in the dealers compound

anyway he negotiated a hefty discount off the lotus money changed hands then he went out to the yard with a required part flipped the bonnet and had it running in less than 20 mins

being as it was a lotus dealer the owner asked ” how the ******* did you get that started??”

the reply came back ” i work for the lotus dealer in newcastle !!” came the reply

anyway as soon as he hit work on monday morning his boss dragged him in the office and the dressing went as follows

    boss ” i’ve had a phone call about you !! ”

mech ” what about boss ??”

boss ” you know damned well what about !!”

    mech ” gulp !”

boss ” what the hell do you think you are playing at ripping other lotus dealers off !!”

mech ” it’s not my fault thier mechanics are clueless , i saw my oppertunity to have the car i wanted at a realistic price !!!”

boss ” i know what you mean , but keep your head down and don’t go there again !! “

mech ” no i won’t be boss verry sorry and all that !”

boss ” now get out !! oh and by the way , nice car smart a**e !! , thank god it’s us that have you up here , well done lad !!”

what’s also worth mentioning is the lotus was actualy dearer than the e type and it was fast and could road hold

i think roadholding was the last thing on the list for the e type probably a case of 50.000 and 3 years spent on looks and 3 quid and a dinner break spent on handling !!

The Preston based Bond Car comapany managed to get access to the Lightnings on the nearby Samlesbury airfield for a publicity photoshoot for the launch of their new four wheel sports car, the Equipe in 1963 – photo here: http://bondcars.net/Equipe%20GT2+2.htm Don’t think Jaguar ever managed such a coup?

wonder if they would have allowed it if they’d discovered they were only heralds realy !!

probably , the herald was better looking !!

    tornado.

You really do talk some tosh at times.

Many years ago I was taught how to use a rifle, several rifles in fact. With practice I learnt to use them so well that I qualified for an RAF marksman’s badge. I shot regularly, with accuracy and with consistency. The last time I fired a rifle was in 1977, it was the ubiquitous Enfield .303. In the 34 years since I have not used a rifle to kill a single living thing. Please tell me how my practice with a rifle, and I practiced assiduously, has been practice for killing something later?

whilst true cars , planes et al can kill that was not thier primary design incentive !!

So the primary design incentive of the Lancaster BOMBER and the EuroFIGHTER Typhoon was to be passenger aircraft?

And if I can ask a question I guess a few others have thought of too, if guns are so abhorrent to you, why ever did you join the Army?

    kev35

kev common sense makes one realise the first aircraft were designed as pioneering thaughts for travel wars mereley develloped them faster

guns however were designed with one intention only wether it be vermin control or people

honestly tell me that thaughts didn’t go through your mind in all that practice that if someone was pi**ing you off you could put one right between thier eyeballs , because i did !!

guns bring out a persons horrible obnoxious side

sure it’s fun when you are younger being trained to hate the enemy being trained on people shaped targets

but as you grow older and hopefully wiser you beggin to think ” what on earth was all that lunacy and idiotic c**p all about ?? “

Guns for sport and for food as well as use as a deterent and the thousands used for shooting at clay pigeons and inanimate targets should be set against those used for the purpose of killing human beings.

but that’s the thing !! all guns will kill irrelavent to what thier normal use is

even low powered firearms will kill depending on distance and where shot

and that’s the whole point a gun isn’t just there for fun it is there for hunting accidents , kids playing with dads gun , the night you feel so low you can’t see any way out , the night you’re in a rage because the milkmans humped your wife for the third time ,etc , etc ,

sorry but you just cannot sepperate them conveniently

what is worth mentioning that if you own an air rifle in the uk it has to be restricted to 12ftlb a pistol to 6ftlb anything above that power output is then classed as a class 1 firearm and as such can earn you a nice stretch inside if not registered !!
