FAA Says Drones and People Donโt Mix

An FAA study released last week concluded that people on the ground are susceptible to three dominant kinds of injuries should they be unfortunate enough to meet up with a drone, especially a unitโs unprotected propellers. Those risks include blunt force trauma, the most significant contributor to fatalities, lacerations and penetration injuries.

Technically it isn’t a ramjet though, it’s a VFDR. The propellant is solid, so no volume constraint.
Launcher exposure? Drag? Think you may be overestimating the extra drag of a few small ram intakes.

The volume constraint is for the carrier aircraft. Think at the added volume of the inlets, hence larger fins, hence heavier body (structural needs) hence larger size etc…
In the 80’s, solid propellant tech were what they were and the Ramjet road was a brilliant choice. Today, solid propellant efficiency has increased by a factor of somewhat two and today (well… next tomorrow) , dualphase propellant (solid to liquid) could even better the overall power efficiency ratio.
Think that the rocket model is the most efficient propulsion system: no external drag added, no propulsion drag, lower aero impact with lesser structural needs and, at the end, more compact missile in term of diameter.
Gone are the days of the mammoth size Genie missiles ๐

I find this whole Meteor thing very funny/ironic. Anyone that followed the project knows that FMRAAM was designed for Typhoon and Typhoon was designed for FMRAAM (now Meteor). So whilst it is a beautiful thing to have the two coming together, it is decades late.

Also, aerodynamically, the ramjet is not in theory the most efficient solution for a missile. That statement is false (think volume constraint, propulsion system inherent drag (compression and expansion drag/inlet drag), carrier volume constraints (hence lower kinetic potential at launch) etc…
I have already mentioned earlier the increased time of launcher exposure due to the range of the weapon that also restricts the time on station of the launcher etc…
You do not compensate an older airframe technology with a Meteor.
The missile being however a formidable ace card in 4th gen vs 4th gen scenarios (think Asia/ Middle East / Sth Am, Africa…).
