But Smyth pointed out that the total number would cover attrition replacements and the so-called sustainment fleet, which is defined as additional aircraft required to sustain the fleet to its out-of-service date as well as to cover maintenance.

Does this means that the alleged total of 138 included the virtual airframe in the stock of spare parts?!!!

The last gen of fighter that can compete equally on cost grounds with other 20y old designs that had 2 DECADES to tune down their cost curve.

I am sorry Sintra but in my Book, this is not what we can call an expensive, over expensive or deficient cost assessment of a product.

To put that in perspective, imagine your brand new Mercedes (or whatever) in the same price range of a 20 years old Renault model (bis on the quotes).

Now, to be back on the Danish polemic, it seems in Boeing perspective that the Danes had over assessed the SH cost by up to 50%. It’s re-assuring to read ths but doesn’t change any beans in the platter. The new shiny toy is still bracketed by older designs in term of cost (ownership). This is an extraordinary performance by itself. When was that the last time we were given to see this?

It’s all about computing power. Nothing fancy here. You can see both competing design at the time (Northrop and LM) being heavily faceted. If I do remind well, Ben Rich in his book Skunk Works is very clear about this.
