Because such huge ASW fleet doesn’t make any sense, in the first place.. There are not enough subs worldwide to justify that, let alone in China or Pakistan..
Right, but they are more silent (stealth) than yesterday subs. It means that you need an increase density of sensors to detect them when it matters.
This is exemplified by the new naval drone tested by the USN that track and follow Subs.
I am not saying that you are wrong but the need for distributed sensor (geographically) is very much compatible with the increase demand in ASW.
The USN responded to this and the need to keep cost low by:
– standardizing their fleet around two models
– contracting maintenance (fixed cost for a set of hours and availability).
And let’s take for example the last DCN 50b$ contract in Au (!). It will be more cost effective to field a large field of ASW than a counter-response in a similarly sized fleet of sub. At 50B$ and a unit price of 33M$, you’ll probably field something like 1500+ MH60R for the same cost.
Notice to reader:
I am obviously discarding the cost of the frigates and destroyer to transport and operate such fleet to exemplify my argument.
