The Swedish situation seems to be very strange. The government seems to expect SAAB to design and build fighter aircraft at the cost agreed between themselves and SAAB. SAAB seems to accept this strange way of handling procurement in contrast to how many other contractors in other countries prefer to operate – they do not feel bound to design and build fighter aircraft at the cost agreed with their government. I find it amusing that the Swedes should do things in such an unusual way when many governments are quite prepared to be taken for a ride by the contractors they choose to use.
One of the funny side effects of the disciplined approach adopted in Sweden is that costs are kept low. Claims of low costs may amuse some people but low costs are hardly surprising, really.

Hot hair are detrimental for a turbine (or mechanical) engine. The qty of Energy that you would be able to output out of such engine depends closely of the difference of temperature b/w the input and output flux.
This is why for example, helo suffers in hot temperature conditions.
A nuclear Engine have no mechanical parts regarding the flux of air. It’s a heat source so important that renders the “waste heat” negligeable (this is a 5 min morning though – take it as it is). However, as BL grow with temperature, it can be useful in the nozzle section increasing the insulation of material.
Please notice that I added an interrogation mark at the end of the title (see news section). This to be debated and assessed as a valid/non-valid news.
The story of the M88 potentially fitted in a JF17 is a long one. The fact that WantChina Times (Taiwan based) reported it last day was the interesting point in my view.
Speaking about sensor fusion I noted that Bogdan made that comment about a 4 planes element:

These claims are completely out of the time frame of the actual Tu-95 incident. It is a classic example of people misidentifying aircraft and then jumping to the wrong conclusions based on a media story. During their claims USAF KC-135s and F-15s were operating in the area along with an RAF C-17 in the circuit at Newquay International. RAF QRA scramble for this incident were RAF Voyager 1435 GMT from RAF Brize Norton and RAF Typhoons from RAF Coningsby at approximately 1630 GMT.
I understand your skepticism, but the first question is: has it happens before ? Did witnesses pop-up with such claims in a similar scenario ?

And by the way, there might have been two planes, one low and a high one to suck-up the QRA away from the simulated strike element*.
What would be the goal of Putin if such is true? Make sure that the RAF keep a consequent part of their fighter squadrons at home in case of a major incident.

Thinking more into the concept, I think a flying flight simulator could come around easily. Systems emulation, adaptive control laws and virtual trafic are now notions that won’t afraid anybody anymore speaking about it. The new key is now to have a low kinetic “situation” simulator to emulate the most hairy critical situations that a pilot now must have to be trained to deal with.
With crash safety design solutions and some other new minded approach, it should be possible to have a safe enough plane offering high sink rate and able to emulate the experience of a deep stall, a flat spin or a crash landing with enough safety and acceleration control to have an Instructor on-board teaching and screening several dozen of trainee at a low cost (before he had seen enough and decide to move on).
This kind of flying kinetic simulator (fitted with the above described virtual rendering systems (trafic, FCS systems and ctrl laws)) could be part of a mandatory session to all trainee with refreshing cursus in place for experienced aircrew.
It’s easy to foresee an economic model around it with the design fulfilling an international RFP (ICAO for example) and the plane being bought by individuals or structures renting hours to companies or professional flying school (just like the NATO’s pilot training system in place).
With such a tool, sensations could be safely introduced in the cursus, adding a new dimension to the training that will bring in a much needed awareness for the pilots encountering a critical situation.
Low kinetics is the necessary variable to emulate safely on a regular basis an abrupt flight departing, a high pitch rate (periodic or pulsed), a high drifting angle, a high sink rate and, of course, the most dairying crash landing training.
With such a tool (and added hardware), we can even envision to train (via flying simulator as opposed ti ground based one) for landing on forest canopy, crash landing at sea, take off and landing in icy/ or heavy snow conditions, extreme cross wind landing and of course, power-off approach (tracting engine at full power for safety – not even at idle).

But wishing for commercial maintenance on bomber engines will be dead on arrival if the government depot at Tinker has anything to say about it. They have their jobs to protect and B-52s continuing to fly with ancient TF33s protects their jobs.
This is quite disrespectful for the people that have managed to keep the BUFF in operation during all those years.
It’s an old bird. There is a plentiful of problems that can arise without a proper notice (see the inner tank coating pealing after the move from JP4 to 8 for ex. ). The synergistic impact of one problem to another push to a cautious stepping into any novel solution.
This is not conservatism. Nor it is a sign of corporatism. This is a scientific and cost effective approach toward any solution.
