What the troops need is an eye in the sky watching over them before they get into trouble, not reacting 10 minutes after the ambush happens. The airborne platform doesn’t need to be armed, it just needs the sensors and avionics to accurately target for off board weapons. Make it small and cheap enough that every patrol that goes outside the wire has a UAS following them. Then have the ground vehicles carry something like Netfires, Griffin, or guided mortar rounds.

Coincidentally, I am working on a tethered design plugged on the power source (eng) of the carrying vehicle.
It’s ideally adaptable to any Humvee, use High power + rugged design + on the shelf tech electro + precise math model + dynamically survivable (40g descent and 20g ascent) + low cost material (basically auto industry) + parametric design for an evolving definition of parts and sub-components.
All this makes it easier for a low cost massively deployable concept.

they had some horrible ineffective “consultant”. That’s for sure! On the news side they have been on the fore front with excellent pedagogic material. That made the diff for me. Even if the 24hr CNN mode can be annoying for some.
The only thing I didn’t really like is their PDF reader interface that didn’t allow for downloading public ressources. That’s was a blow.

It looks like the A380 cannot be exploited by all airlines, indeed, perhaps it can only be exploited by a few – but those that can are benefiting from it.

The tiny problem is that, as you said, it’s an airplane that only a few airlines can exploits with benefits. This was not in the design objectives nor is something seen in the industry as a criteria of success. But it has its own pathway for sure.
Regarding the benefits on a specific plane, don’t forget that Airbus is also “cashing black box”. Invest, order in large, pull out some cash. Raising the profits can be seen as an incentive marketing argument. That and an “over-favorable” taxing model.
I’m hearing rumours that some parties (i.e. U.S. airlines) might be concerned about Emirates (among others) and their growth, or the potential for it, given their resources. Much expansion going on these days?
Emirates and alike are transforming a raw product (oil) into a manufactured one (air travel). They naturally have the leads here and plenty of cash flow.
Until descent administrative and managerial decisions are taken to put back US airlines in the cost cutting race (in fact that not really just cost 😉 ), the trend will not ends.
For example, the 380 is popular among passengers but not that much among shareholders.

I would take contemporary MiG-29 over Mirage 2000 (80s I guess?) as far as Air-to-Air capability goes.

It appears only to make sense using the viewers left and right. Eitherway (if indeed it was a 117 fire) then it’s amazing how far forward it suffered fire damage!
the first article posted here said they were showcasing the bird for an Indian delegation.
They might have pushed the nbr up to impress the viewers or went in an unfavorable pocket of air.
But as you said it’s far frwd for an eng fire. They are talking about a surge and we know that the plane might have had BL ctrl problem (the vacuum piping btw the inlet and the compressor that was spotted on an early birds). So it might be a “simple” surge problem as stated by the article aggravated by the foam for the new composite material.
Anyhow, if true it confirms what we were guessing that, due to kinetic heating, the bird will be introduced in (at least) two phases : normal supersonic mode and, latter a faster bird that we all expect to see one day here.
Another theory relates to your CFD diagrams posted some time ago. the cause might be related to the injection point.
