Navy Issues Restricted UCLASS Draft Request for Proposal

    http://news.usni.org/2014/04/17/navy-issues-secret-uclass-draft-request-proposal

UCLASS program are to provide two intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance orbits at “tactically significant ranges” 24 hours a day, seven days a week over uncontested airspace.

The UCLASS would also have a light strike capability to eliminate targets of opportunity.

Really surprising. Did they split the requirement btw a low and high platform ? Or do they simply bin the rest of their expectation (in favor of what?).

Time to Operational Readiness might have played a big part into it. I guess that the guys at Northrop are disappointed.

Or may be the fact that the draft is unclassified made it more in line with the use of tech and industrial strategy.

Anyhow I can’t think at anything else than an Avenger (with bigger tires!).

The biggest issue to me is the insanely improper fore-aft CG compared to the C/L.

The only way to lift the nose would be to apply so much angle on the horizontal stabilizers that they would also function as air brakes!

That thing needs both canards larger than the horizontal stabilizers mounted just forward of the passenger windows and for the leading edge of the wing to be moved forward to about where the lerx starts now just to fly controllably.

See the frwd section as a big empty tube. No weight compared to the original.

Also, interestingly, the extended wing tip makes the MiG looking even more closely to the mighty Vigilente

Absolutely … I mean come on .. one plane buzzing and Aegis destroyer 🙂 – Childish at best 🙂 Probably we will see some pictures taken from Su-24.

Might they spared us the photo of the pilot’s pants 😮

Seriously, a triple vodka for him :very_drunk:

There is almost no doubt in my mind that a sinister person or persons took charge of this flight, but their motive/s is/are very obscure.

Yes. Sadly speculating on the who’s and what will only lead us to step on someone feet that doesn’t deserve it .We are simply speachless on that path.

The “how” on the contrary might be discussed.

For example, we have now an offcial statement of the range the aircraft flew? How did it manage to do it ? What could have been done to reach that final destination?

I guess if you ever (God forbid) get into a similar situation, send a text message to someone you trust as they usually stay in the outbox and go through when the phone makes contact with a ground station. In fact, send messages with all resources (whatsapp, skype etc)

I fear that this is not the way to do. By queuing request in your communication, you might jam the available bandwidth in case of interminent connection.

The best IMOHO is to use the lighter format (text-message) and prey for it to go through all the way down the recipient.

On (an even) darker note, I fear that a non-in flight-accessible video recording device could have prevented that incident. For example, would have they smoked in the cockpit while the two girls from Australia were in there if they were aware that a video was recorded ?
Don’t take me wrong, doing stupid things in presence of girls is not to be blamed… But never in a place or time where the life of many rely on your sole responsibility.

I really can’t share the arguments pushed frwd by the Pilot Union. Frankly that’s stupid, irrelevant and… shocking given the circumstances.

The projected price tag for the new Boeing KC-46 tanker has fallen $1.8 million per aircraft, according to a new Government Accountability Office (GAO) report.

    http://www.defensenews.com/article/20140410/DEFREG02/304100031/USAF-Tanker-Price-Tag-Projection-Drops-1-8M-Per-Aircraft

A bit mysterious to me. I thought I read in the last week that the program cost had risen by US$1+ billion. Did anyone read that?

    a hint?:

The report states that initial test and evaluation — scheduled for May 2016 — may slip six to 12 months.

Not really AIR Forces, but didn’t know where to put this despite its significance. In case you feel that another thread on the forum is more suited than this one, please, feel free to re-allocate the following link

    From the news thread:

Current bets include a free Rafale joy-ride, and/or a Rafale/Neuron tandem flight. Me, I’m going for the first Rafale export! 😀

It can’t be the export option as it won’t be a world premiere. Idem for the Neuron being piloted from the back seat. Nor can it be for a strike coordinated by the raf.

This buzz is probably more related to some recent internal french political affairs. See it more like a smoke screen.

Sad day by the way. But France own a sense of drama that nobody would deny.
